The SL is about $15k more than the S-Class so they needed a sub-$100k model (due to extremely low sales - convertible sales of all brands are shrinking as well) and the CLS will also be downsized to the E-Class engines.

Would argue MB has lost its way again w/S-Class, much like it did 15yrs ago w/laughable reliability (effectively, safety if drivetrain-related)/quality issues
Latest ('15-'16) S65 Coupes have absurdly jerky gearboxes, throttle hesitation, squeaky/groaning CCBs, etc in routine urban driving (notably worse than '13-'14 SL65s w/CCBs in same conds, brakes properly bedded, cars always driven in S/S+ mode)
Ironically, latest S65 Coupes are far more enjoyable driver's cars in mtn twisties than latest-gen SL65s (or the laughable, tq-free GTS)....prob smarter chassis, more enjoyable downshift blips/exhaust music vs SL65, both driven top/windows closed on same rds by same driver
MB needs to better understand use cases of 550/65 vs repeat buyer base: mockable when MB can't solve basic stuff like smooth gearboxes in urban driving, when that is 95+% of driving of repeat buyers of any new, >>$100K car: 63 is a case study in a POS $175K car w/inept, arguably unsafe 8yo gearbox ruining any driver enjoyment
Ole 5sp in 65 was a fairly smooth gearbox; when have high tq, excessive no. of gears generally entails safety/reliability risks of failing at-speed/in-traffic at worst (think MCT/DCT/PDK), or just a jerky box/throttle hesitation which makes routine driving annoying/nonconfidence-inspiring at best: pathetic in any >500lb-ft, >$100K car

The V6 isn't that bad, it does 51mpg in the current S non facelift, but coming from more powerful cars you may sometimes feel an itch to upgrade.

I come from the UK so as the poster above has said, it's probably not the same as what you would, but due to the increase in fuel capacity(I think please correct me if I'm incorrect) of 15 UK gallons to 18US Gallons so I would've guessed a little above 35mpg highway for you guys.
The S350 does get around 50mpg on highway, which is my primary use for this car. Around town I do above 30(not really around town per say). The mpg on the S Class which is indicated on the right of the navigation screen shows 51, I know I do at least 600 miles per tank due to the car mainly being used for the same journey, the tank is 70l or around 15 UK gallons. 600/15 means I do at least 40mpg including some town driving. I haven't been in the S Class since someone managed to open the car and steal my belongings when I had definitely locked the car, too scared to take it anyway until this issue is resolved. I can post other sources if requested.
Thanks.

Sorry, I'm unaware of the point of this article? I'm not talking about what the manufacture claimed, or European tests or whatever. I'm talking about personal experience and other credible sources such as magazine articles and other owners. The official figure is 61.4mpg, on highway runs the computer shows around the 50 mark imperial mpg at 80mph for approximately 2 or 3 hours. Autocar, autoexpress and the likes get around 50.4mpg. I mean, I understand why you're so sketchy, coming from the previous S350 and S320 this is a drastic change. Are there any other 222 S350 owners here?

#1) the imperial gallon is not equivalent.
#2) the actual European cycle testing is off by around 40% frequently compared to ours.
Thus I divide by 2 to get approx US mpg.

it is 2 problems. I should have explained more clearly for readers.

There's S63s on this forum doing 24mpg while the claimed is 26 or 28 I think. I'm quite sure theres S550 owners here also getting similar to claimed. The article you posted mentions the A Class and C Class doing these low results, a fact that also needs to be questioned as all the C and E loaners I've had have all done quite high with that article basically implying below 30s.

EPA is also easily off by 40%. First off, their calculation is a best case scenario never met by any brand.
Then personal driving style greatly influences fuel consumption (in my case negatively )
I tend to trust the mileages that users report the most but it always helps to know what engines the car has and country this info is coming from...

Once again, European Cycle Testing was not mentioned, I mentioned results which I had achieved on motorway runs and added HonestJohn which had urban figures similar to what I get in town(high 30s. low 40s)

I've got the S350 Bluetec SWB, in the UK.
Just wondering what peoples opinions are on this new touchpad, I'd much rather prefer the scrolling wheel:
