Steering/Wheel Noise
My steering/wheel just started making a rubbing noise when slowly turning the wheel after the car has been driven for a while (car only has about 2800 miles) it also makes the noise when the engine is off
Any insight is appreciated.

Could be the rubber boot inside the steering column---not a DIY and expensive to fix--have the dealer look at the issue!!

Appreciate the thought about the boot, it could very well be or perhaps the rubber damper? Could it get worse and/or cause any damage? If the car is new any reason not to have it repaired? Any idea why it only makes noise after being driven a while?

Yes that is also correct---I doubt it will cause any physical damage and I have no idea why the noise is intermittent, but as suggested I would see the dealer!!

Spoke w/the shop foreman at my local dealership and this is a known issue with the w222, he believes it also may affect my/the c217. Apparently there is something in the lower steering column that is rubbing, and lubbing the part may or may not help, especially permanently. Replacing the defective part is the only solution requiring the column to be replaced.

I was getting sort of a loud "BAROOOUGHM" noise on start up, especially after the car had sat in the sun for a bit. They said something was rubbing when the column started to descend. They replaced the entire column and all is back to normal.

I just picked my car up from my Florida house where it was sitting a few weeks in a hot garage. Steering column was making a new rubbing noise as well. Drove it to RI in 2 days and noise seemed to improve but not disappear. Could the heat have anything to do with it?

Steering column noise when turning SOLVED
Hi guys, I had the same issue with my S63AMG. One day, out of nowhere, after a 150km drive, the noise appeared. By the time I was back, it was like a cow dying in my cabin when turning. I thought it's the electric steering motor. However ! I did a quick test: i stopped the engine then turned the steering manually(hard to do). The noise was still there. So that means nothing to do with the motor. Next I pulled the plastic cover at the base of the steering column and press my hand while turning the steering. The noise was gone.
So that meant lack of greasing somewhere. I sprayed WD40 on the steel(shaft) and let it sink for 10sec. The grease slides down the shaft into the rubber boot. I guess it's also the smoke/fire shield for the cabin. After that, NOISE GONE.
Again, dying cow inside cabin, that's how loud it was. All in the course of 4 hours. Quiet to very loud.
WD40 will dry out, so you will have to use a thicker grease. Unfortunately you cannot reach the base of the shaft so it must be spray. Hope this helps !
Good luck !

Here’s my situation. Twice, ran over temporary rumble strips for road construction notification - 40-50 mph. Then, when turning wheel in traffic, rubbing/mild grinding/cow mooing noise. Both directions. Happened the rest of the day. Car sits 1-2 days and noise is gone. This happened 6 weeks apart. Make appt when it happens, cancel appt when it isn’t there on the way to the dealer both times so I won’t drive an hour to hear “could not duplicate condition” and drive another hour home. Next time I will record it! Anyone have this issue come and go away by itself?

Thanks, printed it out and took it to my dealership and they are going to tear it down and replace whatever part or parts that are bad. It’s a known issue and my extended warranty will pay. If not it has to be fixed. I’m not driving a 200k car that sounds like a 1998 Honda. One way or the other, it will get fixed. Thank you

I believe I have posted this before, but right after I bought the car in a private transaction in April 2019 I had a similar issue and took to dealer. From the service invoice, a $145 repair and no issues since:
VERIFIED COMPLAINT, PARTIALLY REMOVED STEERING COLUMN UNDER PANEL, LUBE BOOT FOR STEERING SHAFT AS
NEEDED, REINSTALLED REMOVED COMPONENTS, CHECKED STEERING WHEEL FOR NOISE, NO NOISE HEARD AT THIS TIME,
