I am not sure about that though. One thing I noticed about the W221 is that almost all the buttons are made out of aluminum and not plastic.

Over 4 years in, the W222 is a more reliable car than the W221 was. Which in turn was much more reliable than the W220. That model was a budget version and represented a time of lower quality at MB (2000-2005/2006)

Not disputing your claim as that would be consistent with what I've seen on these boards but CR identified the 2015 S Class as a used car to avoid due to poor reliability. CR is pretty good at sorting the good from the bad so trying to reconcile the two different perspectives.

Just the 2015? Not the 2014 or the 2016, just the 2015? Crazy. My 2015 was very reliable.

Yes 2015. I was surprised / disappointed to see. https://www.consumerreports.org/used...-avoid-buying/ Like I said in my post I would have expected the W222 not to be considered unreliable based on the lack of complaints on this board. The W220 and W211's had tons of issues on MBWorld. My prefacelift W211 was always in the shop the W212 has been much more reliable. CR would site my W212 as being a good used car pick. I only mention that because I think that their guidance has credibility

Stream, how was you facelifted w221 for reliability?

I think 2010-2013 were more reliable in that chassis. I've had great luck.

Anyone in their right mind will avoid using CR as any reference for luxury cars.
That said, S-class buyers are a finicky bunch. I know of a Maybach buyer returning his car because he was too stupid to use the command system favorite buttons with the intro of the touchpad.
There are quite a few small issues that where reported on launch such as squeaky brakes, wind noise, misaligned fuel doors, etc.
All were minor and cheap to fix and in lesser cars would simply be not even complained about.

But it there is no comparison to prior models. These forums are a great check on how reliable cars actually are because every issue is diacussed in great detail.

On the W222 forum you mainly hear crickets

None, interested in buying S350
I am buying used S Class here in Europe and I have basically choice between high-end W221 (2012, 100,000 km) or basic W222 (2014, 100,000 km). Which one would be better choice. The W221 would be equipped with pre-safe, distronic plus, rear comfort seats, etc while W222 would have just park assit and few other functions. Both cars would be 4 Matic. What would you recommend me?

That’s a tough one. In the USA, the ‘14 would probably qualify for an extended warranty, which I would find very appealing, as these cars can be VERY expensive to repair, should something go wrong. On the other hand, I cannot begin to tell you how important Distronic Plus is to me. What I would do, is try to find a W222 that is better equipped.

I could not agree more to this. Distronic plus is a must. And if you can get a W222, that is so much better, in my opinion.

Just to throw my 1/50th of a dollar in, I wouldn't allow myself to be limited to these two options. Seems like you are making a big sacrifice either way. Might as well get a totally different car if you are forced to make such a trade off.
