Good time to buy 2017 S-Class?

My parents have been looking at replacing their aging luxury cars for a while (I posted a question about the refresh a long time ago) and are thinking of buying the 2017 S-class if they can get it at a discount to when the 2018 refresh is released.

From what I've seen the only differences are minor cosmetic as well as some enhancements to semi autonomous driving that they would never use. Basically they want a car that's comfortable and safe for 4 adults for around town and road trips. Having different settings for synchronizing perfume and interior lights doesn't seem like it's worth waiting for and paying a premium.

With that background, would this be a good time to walk into the dealer and pull the trigger? What kinds of discounts should they expect to be able to get for buying the old model with the new one already announced?

I don't know when the 2018s are expected to hit lots, but I would expect the dealers would look to move the 2017s with 2018s coming in. I would definitely test the waters and see what kind of pricing you can get. Maybe keep an eye out for incentives (I check edmunds.com for that stuff).

Best time is month end this Oct/Nov/Dec

FL models should be here by then so these 2017 "leftovers" will be very aggressively discounted

I picked up a leftover 2016 C300 on the last day of February 2017. Those were the last ones for my dealer. They blew out all but 1 car (brown with $50K MSRP) on that day.

So for the S Class, I'm thinking December this year. But if you're willing to roll the dice on inventory, you may get a killer deal in Feb or Mar 2018. Just see how inventory levels are, and perhaps lease rates, at year's end.

My sweet spot is if discounts hit 25%. I would likely bite then if lease rates are also aggressive.

The best or nothing
There are plenty of deals on 1 year old W222s' - all trims / engines up to Maybach in Europe now. When you track ads you can see drops in prices up to $40k on selected models.

I tried to negotiate a deal and get a 2016 S500 down at least $15k - ex. MB Manager's car, $140k MSRP new, now $100k. I've been told they won't discount. Two weeks later, the price is $90k.

Anyway, you cannot go wrong with either pre-FL or FL, W222 is a great car.
I think your parents will be happy with the W222, no matter what year or options.

If you want the best, tt is well worth the wait, on top of that.. who would buy an S500 if you can have the S560 soon? I'd opt for S500 9G (not 7G) if I'd wanna buy right now.

The reason we are thinking to buy pre FL primarily is price as well as not valuing the changes enough to justify the price. Sure if we had the choice without regard to cost we'd take the FL, but if we can get a good deal of the pre FL the we'd go for that.

Perhaps they'd even go for one a year or 2 old as long as it's in good condition. Their current cars are 03 and 05 Lexus LS 430 so they keep cars for a long time so the warranty and reliability are important.

Can you explain what you mean by 9G vs 7G?

I got $50k off msrp on a 2015 CPO with 21k miles. Looks and feels brand new. May be a better way to go. I do not think there have been any major changes from 2015 til 2017.

Good luck!

The best or nothing
9G is the newest transmission, faster, more efficient and hopefully more reliable.

You can compare the difference in performance 7G vs 9G

I'm turning my GL in early due to lease accelerator and getting a 2017 S for $17k off MSRP in PA. MSRP is $119,365, selling price $102,674. Would love for someone to verify Tier 1/2 residual and MF with Mercedes so I can validate lease numbers.

UK numbers here. I took delivery March 2017 of an S350d (3L diesel) SWB AMG Line Premium Plus with about £7k more options, ordered in Oct 2016. Discount was about 21% off published list, rising to 28% off when I paid off the finance early, so £60k.

At that time in the UK they were discounting nationally, base S350d at £54k plus finance cost of about £5k, from £70k list. And the UK has a maturing 3rd party portal market that lets participating dealers compete for your business by sending you their best offer over their app or email.

Here she is!

On a tour of Northern Italy, today near Lake Como.
