Offer the 6 at a substantial savings over the 8, with similar, or at least decent performance, and the S500 will be a home run. MB would love nothing more than for previous V8 customers to go for a 6 in the S Class. I believe this is why the new E was debuted with only an I4 available in non-AMG trim. The more smaller engined cars they sell, the easier it is for them to continue lining their pockets from selling monster AMG vehicles and to meet CAFE standards at the same time.

This new engine news is making me second guess my new car plans. After going round and around, I was planning on ordering a new S560 in September. However, an S500 sounds very enticing, so I'm back to considering what to do. It's always something!

There won't be a I6 S500 in the U.S. Next generation S-Class maybe, but not during the W222 model cycle.

If anyone happens to know...I'm wondering when a facelifted plug-in hybrid might appear, what engine it will have, and whether it would offer AWD?

All the models change to the facelift body at the same time. The plug-in hybrid however is not yet on our price list.

From here: http://www.jesmb.de/indexie.htm I interpret that the plug-in hybrid should have a higher capacity battery and a more powerful electric motor on the facelift.

Thanks, DieselBenz. There doesn't seem to be any hint of a 4matic hybrid, which means I probably won't be getting one when the facelifted hybrid comes to the USA.

There will be a S560e Plug-In-Hybrid that will be available for ordering in Europe in September.

Not sure about the US.

With all the talk of the new I6 engines, what is the story with the new V8 going into the S560? Will this car have the 48 volt system, electric appliances, no belts, etc? If not, when do we think these systems will make it to the V8, or will they?

The S560 will use the M176 engine which is essentially the lower-power, non-AMG Stuttgart-build version of what you find in the the AMG models ranging from the C63 to the AMG GT range.
It's a new high-efficiency engine design but not a mild hybrid.

Yes it looks like only the S500 will be 48-volt mild hybrid for now, not the S560 or S450.

The Euro S450 and S500 will be. The US S450 will not be in the short-term. Presumably it will be in MY19.
No word on the S500 coming to the US.

according to motortrend,

What I’m really saying is, Mercedes, give us the good stuff! Speaking of good stuff, you had better believe that the 48-volt technology will propagate throughout the Mercedes lineup. The most logical variant will be an inline-four, and that’s definitely coming. There will eventually be a 48-volt mild-hybridized V-8, too. Much more interesting, to me at least, will be the new 6.0-liter V-12, which will essentially be two M256s joined at the crank. If one M256 is 435 horsepower, we’re talking an easy 800 horsepower here, if not more, and that’s in the non-AMG state of tune. 1,000 horsepower electrically assisted beltless 12-cylinder? Me want now. Me bet you want now, too.
