BMW 8

I'll post this here since the coupe forum is all crickets.

Tempting...could take a bite out of 217 sales

I don’t really care for big coupes anymore, as they seem to me nothing more than a fashion statement. They are usually almost the size of the corresponding sedan, way less comfortable & practical, and usually way more money for less content. I had a new 560SEC in 1987 and a couple of 850I’s in the early 90’s, but since then, it has been full size sedans or convertibles. If BMW would make something along the lines of the SL, with a retractable hard top, now THAT would interest me, especially since all of the latest scuttlebutt has it that the next generation SL will go back to a fabric top, which I find to be just ridiculous and very disappointing. I saw a Rolls-Royce Dawn the other day, which has only been on the market for a year or so and the fabric top was already showing all the dirty creases where it folds when lowered. I like my cars to always look like new and to have a very expensive car with a top that starts to rapidly deteriorate almost immediately, over a retractable hardtop that will remain perfect for decades, just makes zero sense to me. How did I get off on convertibles? Sorry.

We’ll have to see how the actual production version will look like. Plus how they market the car.

I like it.

BMW completely miscalculated the coupe market with the 6series and overpriced them horrendously.

The 6 series was based on the 5 series but often more expensive than a 7 series. MB did a much better job with positioning the CLS. BMW has since killed off the 6 series a couple of years ago (slow phase out) since the S-Class coupe showed commercial success and decided to bring back the 8 series.

I love the S-class coupe and prefer coupes over sedans...

My favorite thing about this car was the way he opened the door with just a pass of his hand at a sensor.

Agreed, the S coupes are very special automobiles (always have been)...luv mine.
With that said, the 8 might affect my decision on an '18 560 217...I'm VERY loyal to MB, but I will need to experience the new 8 before I make the final call.
I like how the 8 may raise the bar for all the big coupes, as completion is good for all!

Obviously they're completely different kinds of cars intended for different kinds of buyers, with the 8 iaimed directly at the large Gran Touring segment. Is the I8 your favorite looking BMW?

yes and that will never make it to production. Every concept car since the 80s always has ridiculous door handles and ridiculous side mirrors that never make it to production. The only exception to that are exotics.

I like the 8 series concept too. I get the BMW CCA magazine & they've been running a lot of print on this car. Can't wait to see it in person.
