Snap, Crackle & Pop—Is this supposed to be cool???

I realize this doesn’t apply to W222 cars, but this is where I live, so I thought I would post this here:
Yesterday, as I sat at the car wash on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, it seemed that every exotic car in town was roaring up and down the road. It must have been some club event or some such thing. It was a bit crazy and the one thing that stood out, was the crackling, popping, sort of backfiring sounds these cars made. Even some of the Porsche’s were doing this. To me, it sounded horrible and I would never want a car of mine to sound like that, even in my younger years when I used to drive hot cars. To me, it sounded like these cars were out of tune, but I’m sure that’s not the case. So, what is it? Is this noise the new thing for exotic cars, or is this the modern day version of putting glasspacks on your ‘57 Chevy? Funny though, the McLarens didn’t seem to have this problem, it was mostly the Ferraris, Lambos & Porsche’s.

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
What was maybe the same group came south down PCH while I was in the gas station in Dana Point. I find the sound of those cars annoying and I am a car guy. The worst are the V8 Ferrari’s. They have flat rather than 2 plane crankshafts for better high RPM power but they sound to me like out of tune 2 cycle lawn mowers.

I really like the new AMG GTr exhaust sound! It sounds so mean. But I could see how the older crowd may not like the pop and cracks

My AMG does it when I slow down quickly at a traffic light, or if I paddle shift it earlier and quicker than the manual wants to downshift. Sometimes I do it just to play around.

My 2013 Jag XKR with the factory performance exhaust barks/spits/pops, but only does so after heavier throttle inputs. I like that many of the newer perf cars have a switch to completely disable, but Jag did a great job automatically controlling this on the XKR, and not so much on the F-type R (too much too often).

Well, I have to admit that the AMG does exactly that. They have build that way of course. Chris Harris called that "Stuttgart flatulence"

In our case it easy to turn it off/on with a muffler flap button (quiet or loud with backfires)

Yes it is cool. My Z06 doesn’t do it enough. I guess it’s not for the type of person that would get in a sports car and complain about how stiff the suspension is...

Well, different strokes for different folks, but to me, it’s just noise, in the same category as the idiots on the modified Harley’s that think they are such hot shxt, when even an old 1970’s Kawasaki 3 Cylinder Mach IV can almost silently leave them in the dust. Anyone can make noise to attract attention, which is pretty much the idea behind a screaming child. For me, take the precision sounding whine of a 1960’s Ferrari 330GTS or a Series One E Type Jaguar as it accelerates through the gears, or even the wonderful sound of a mid 60’s fuel injected Corvette, not to mention the mechanical melody emitted by an original 300SL. Those cars, in stock form, didn’t make noise, they made music. I’m afraid that these days, just being fast, beautiful and expensive isn’t enough. So many are not happy unless they scream out LOOK AT ME: mine is bigger than yours! Oh well, the sign of the times.
Merry Christmas!

Funny, when I titled this thread “Snap, Crackle & Pop,” I was obviously borrowing the Rice Krispies slogan. Nice to see it used in the latest Automobile Magazine write up on the 2018 S Coupe & Cabriolet. As someone who lived for many years on the Westside of Los Angeles, I find their thoughts “......if keeping up with the $300,000 to $500,000 Joneses is your bag” hilarious. Outside of taking these monster cars to the track, which virtually nobody does, there is absolutely no place to use the capabilities of the AMG cars anywhere in the greater L.A. area, without doing so at the peril of the driver, passengers and anyone in the vicinity. IMO, these cars, on public roads and highways, especially in Southern California, are nothing more than fashion statements, most all driven by folks who have absolutely no idea how to handle one of these cars should they ever floor the accelerator in anger. Of course, if I were a stockholder in DB, I would be thrilled the way they get people to buy all this torque and horsepower that they will never use and to pay so dearly for it, just so they can look rich. Amazing.

I have driven my S450 now for about 2 months. The V6 power is more than enough for my needs. Plenty of pick up to merge and decent mileage to boot!
