My cabin noise comparison between S Class, Range and Range Sport

Hello,

I am maniac of silence onboard, so here is a small recording I made that lets you listen to the differences between 4 cars... I think the S class is the best for my ears

Curious as to how you think this is a good comparison? 3 SUV’s and one sedan. Maybe you may want to consider testing 4 vehicles from the same class-genre. Audi A8- BMW 7 series - Full size Cadillac and the S Class Mercedes. That would be a comparison that would have some meaning on this forum.

Well, it is a good comparison at least for me because...I was hesitating between those cars actually for my next one.. and was unable to find any comparisons anywhere. I was also under the impression from the various reviews that it was already known that the S Class was more silent than A8 and Serie 7.

Thanks, Spooky. I'm not in the market for an SUV now but I think your method is a good one. So much more useful than the dBA readings that some car mags publish, since those give you no idea of tone. I wish the car mags would adopt your methodology, and post on their websites sound clips at a standardized speed.

That's pretty cool. At first I thought I was going to see video inside the cars I played it twice and then understood what you did,. Cool.

I would just love to see all the big, German sedans tested like this with the new Genesis G90 included. I believe the results would be surprising, with the Korean car being the most quiet.

I drove the g90 the first year it came out. Much noisier than s550. s550 is the quietest car in the world

I have a RRS autobiography V8 supercharged, they are not really quiet at all. In dynamic mode the exhaust comes alive

Thanks for your interest for those results. I also found that sound meters (devices that measure the sound in dBA, I use the Testo816) do not always give realistic results (for instance my AstonDB9 gives the same dB as a Bmw i8, while to my ears the DB9 is much noisier), I however displayed the dB in the video for reference.

And of course, such comparison work only if performed on the same road, dry conditions and are specific for a given brand and size of tires (indicated in the video). For example, the AMG wheels are noisiers.

Just for information, the recording was done with a Roland Edirol using the internal microphone (left one) with the settings below (recording using iPhone is not reliable because level may vary substantially between models).

Spooky (also my NickName on Call of Duty 4 for those who play online )

Cool

Just added the S500L 2015 in Continental to the recordings, sounds like the most silent of all so far (although the road was not dry):

By chance, it is actually the one I intend to buy

i'm the same when it comes to noise. The S class is by far the quietest car i have ever owned and i've owned many mercedes, bmw (incl 7 series), lexus and land rover. I use the iphone app Decibel X to compare noise when i change out my tires. I select the same stretch of road and drive it before and after a tire change. helps me when the tires are up again on selection of the next set.

So, what tire brand/model have you found to be the most quiet?

Continental WinterContact.... but I only tested 2 tires on 3 S Class: 2 had the conti and one had the Goodyear. These are all winter tires by the way on 18' wheels.
I am in the process of buying a used S500L 4Matic V8.

Per this article the S550 quietest car in its class and is 26% quieter than the G90.

Thanks!
I was doing like you, with the NoiseMeter app on iPhone before I realized that:
1. The recorded level changes *a lot* between iPhones (even same generation...)
2. The dB (even dBA which is supposed to match human spectrum) measurement does not match -at all- the actual noise experience (for instance and BMW i8 and a Aston Martin DB9 give the same reading, but the the i8 is by far quieter).

Well, I won’t argue with precise instruments, but I’ve had my 2015 S550 since new and I drove the new G90 5.0 V8(the C&D test did not say if the G90 was the V6 or the V8) around for a couple of days, around my neighborhood, over 100 miles on the freeways, etc. and I felt the cabin was more hushed than in my S. I’ve never cared for the engine sound that comes through the firewall in my S and there was absolutely none of that in the G90. However, I certainly feel that the W222 is the overall better car, so I plan on driving one for the next several years, but I do feel very strongly that the G90 is in the game as an S Class competitor. I like it better than the BMW 7, better than the Continental and better than the Panamera. Give Genesis a few years, to develop an air or other luxury suspension, let them offer more interior options, massage seats and they are right there with the big boys. I am very pleased to see the Koreans building this car. It was the Japanese who kicked the Germans in the *** with the Lexus and that made MB & others up their game. I believe that Genesis will have a similar effect—maybe not immediately, but over time. It’s easy to poo-poo something from Korea, but I’ve owned lots of brand new, high end cars and the G90 impressed the hell out of me, especially when you consider the $71K price.

I was surprised to see an average noise of 69db on highway speeds. (same as my C class). I was being driven in a limo (new S class) so was curious why it was so noisy. It wasn't what I expected.

Most of the noise was from the tires though.

That said, I have a question. I had the cooled seats on (in the rear where I was sitting). Do the cooled seats make more noise when the car is at speed and not at idle? I would think this is a stupid question but it's the only explanation I can conjure up as my head still can't wrap itself around the 69db value. Thanks

Bet you anything the car was riding on run flat tires, which, IMO, are day and night louder than some of the nearly silent conventional tires.

I'm confident the car was running on RFT. That said i'm trying to eliminate the various variables hence my (seemingly stupid) question.

have you done any testing on the w221. Would be cool to see how it compares out of everything else you've done so far.

My 2018 S63 is much louder in the cabin than the older 2007 S550. I am not talking about engine noise/bark or in sports mode either. I'm not sure why, but take for example driving through a street construction zone. They normally have gravel or debris on the road from trucks moving in and out of the roadway and every time I drive pass, the gravel noise is substantially louder in the AMG. It sounds like its banging the entire car and the noise is louder on all four corners. I am not speeding through either, slow steady at ~5-10. The S550 did much better. Expected noise from the debris but it didn't sound like rocks were being thrown at me. Suspension is different on the vehicles and both were in comfort mode.
