There is apparently not a firm rule that MB will not sell the 3 year warranty extension to a second owner. I picked up my current W222 S65 with about 2k miles on it and it was not MB certified. I owned the car for a year, had it serviced exclusively at the local MB dealer.I then asked the dealer to sell me the 3 year extension. They were able to but needed permission from MBUSA. I was told the service history they now had was critical to the positive decision.

How funny! 😂. Back in the 70s? I remember my 1987 300E that had an MSRP of $60,000 in 1987. I sold the car at 200,000 miles. No warranty. Just paid for repairs as they occurred. Maybe I am getting old but what happened to enjoy the car and pay for things when they need to be repaired? I have never purchased an extended warranty on an auto. The insurance/extended warranty company is making money from people that think these cars will go to 50k miles and cost an arm and a leg to repair. Yes they can be costly but it is the cost of enjoying great autos. If one can’t afford to repair the cars, maybe one should not buy the car to begin with? Ok I am an old fart! Just had to laugh at the idea that one has to get rid of a car at 50k miles to avoid the repairs.

Yes repairs can be expensive. But our cars are expensive. I am driving a $137k ‘16 S550 4matic purchased new along with atleast 6 other S Class cars that I can remember purchasing (just order the next car a ‘19 S63). If one can afford these cars one sure should be able to afford repairing them. It comes down to a cost benefit analysis and if you own one of these types of cars over a long period of time you will be further ahead self insuring yourself (I guess that is the CPA in me that has analyzed 30 years of owning MBs). I am way ahead of the game over more than 30 years of owning MBs by not buying the expensive extended warranty every time even if I had an expensive repair and I have had a few like the car my son drives (one of my cars) a 2013 E350 4matic with a $5000 repair at 56000 miles to replace a leaking gas tank—the dealer and MBUSA covered the cost as goodwill (one more reason I favor my local dealer to build up lots of goodwill). A friend of mine that owns a transportation company had the airmatic suspension go out at 200k miles on one of their S class cars. 10k for a repair. So yes expensive but relative to the the cost of these cars it is a drop in the bucket.
