Correct Oil Filter
I have a new to me 2016 S550 4matic sedan. I'm trying to buy aftermarket Mann oil filters. They have 2 different ones possible. HU7025z and HU6008z. They are obviously different. They both reference engine #278929. The only difference I can detect is the filter (HU7025z) has a stem and so does the one in the car. Is that it? If anybody knows which one I need I would appreciate the help. Also Mann doesn't say if the filters are Fleece. Anybody know? I had an 06 E500 and did the oil changes myself.
The filter in the car. I do not know if it's correct.

From EPC using engine 278929:
A2761800009
https://www.mercedesbenzstarparts.co...ent-2761800009
The diagram on the mercedesbenzstarparts site shows the stem. The WIS diagram does not show the stem, because the 3D orthographic view is from the other end of the filter.
Using the A276 part number, the Mann site pulls up a filter with a stem. The filter that you removed from the engine has a stem. I would say you need the one with the stem.

Correct Oil Filter
First of all I want to thank Chassis for the quick reply and help. However, the mystery only deepens. When I check EPC with my VIN it returns oil filter A2781800009 see attached pictures. This is definitely NOT the one that is currently in the car and it was just serviced before I purchased the car from a MB Dealership. The oil also doesn't look very clean for only having 800 miles on this oil change (but it might be the detergent effect of the oil, I don't know.) My first concern is what does that stem do with the o-ring at the bottom if it's the wrong filter? Could I be damaging the engine by blocking oil passages that aren't supposed to be blocked? Again, thanks for the help.

Count yourself lucky, the one you have in your car is much easier and cheaper to source. I have to go to the MB dealership to get mine as it is the filter assy without the plastic parts.

Waking this one back up for a quick clarification ... can you take off the cap to see the filter without spilling a bunch of oil? Maybe Nice Ride meant with all the oil drained out ...

You can check the filter with the oil in the car as MB conveniently put the filter on top of the engine and the cap will drip a few drops but nothing more than that. My issue is there is a HU7025 in the car and it seems fine. All the literature says it could be either a HU7025 or a HU6008. My real question is will the HU6008 fit into the7025 housing? If it does not fit then I know the HU7025 is correct.

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with the MB oil filter. I know MB filters used to be "fleeced" but they have apparently gotten away from that.

Nothing that I know of, I thought Mann was the OEM supplier for MB. I just want to make damn sure I have the correct filter in the car.I just bought a pair of HU7025 on eBay.

Several years ago Mercedes stated phasing in the new 'chevron pleated' filter made by Purflux. Most Mercedes engines now use this filter, but for some unknown reason a W222 4.7L V-8 could have either a Purflux or the "fleece" filter ... thus the advice to see which kind your car has and continue to use that. As best I can tell you can't switch them, so the housing or something else must be specific to the filter type used.

I found a few Purflux L394s on hand from my C350, so trying to determine whether to keep them to use in my current car.
