2015 S Class Coupe After Being Hit at High Speed

My 2015 S Class Coupe after being hit at high speed by someone running a red light this past Tuesday. Repair estimate exceeds $36,000. Will require a month to complete the repair. I have a 2018 S Class Sedan on the way -- it's currently on a ship nearing Charleston, SC and should arrive early in June.

That's horrible. Hope no one got hurt.

Your sedan must be on Grand Neptune which is the same ship that dropped mine at Brunswick yesterday.

I got some cuts, bruises and soft tissue injuries, but nothing broken -- fortunately. Right hand was very bruised, apparently by the impact of the airbag, which may have also pushed my right arm very hard (it's still quite sore).

And yes, my sedan is on the Grand Neptune. I watched the tracking as it approached Brunswick and spent about two days there. The ship then went to Charleston, SC -- apparently to pick up some Sprinters. It should be on its way to Long Beach, CA, shortly, where it will drop mine.

I glad there were no major injuries. MB are one of more safe cars on the road.

Hopefully Grand Neptune picks up some speed and makes some time, it was delayed by 2 days getting to Brunswick. I am impatiently waiting for mine to be loaded on a truck and delivered to the dealership.

Glad you did not suffer worse injuries. Just curious: why the change from coupe to sedan?

I love my coupe dearly, but recently got married and my spouse had a stroke that makes getting into and out of the coupe difficult, especially when I am taking my aged mother-in-law anywhere with us and she can't get into the back seat at all. I also got a dog. So the coupe became difficult to live with, unfortunately. I would love to have another one. The 2018 sedan does drive much better than the 2015 version I test drove before getting the coupe back then. Still, I'm going to miss my coupe. I like its interior better and especially the saddle tan color, which unfortunately is not available in the sedan. Plus the coupe body is a stunning work of art.

Do you have a picture of the other car? How fast were they going?

This is the guy who ran the red light and hit me -- he must have become airborne because landed atop the traffic control box, about 3 feet in the air. I suspect it takes at least 75 mph to get that kind of trajectory -- and the box is about 30 yards or so away from the point of impact. I think he tried to cut in front of traffic that was stopped in addition to what appears to be a very high rate of speed.

I see damage to the front and back. Which part of his car hit you?

The entire driver's side -- from nose to tail -- is seriously damaged. I may have a pic somewhere -- if I can find it, I'll post it.

Here's a pic of the other car that I snagged from video footage that was taken right after the accident.

UPDATE: The body shop has submitted an addendum to its original repair estimate. Total cost is no longer $36,000. It has soared past $51,000 -- and my insurance company is on the verge of declaring my 2015 S 550 4-Matic Coupe totaled. Residual on my lease is above $70,000. Not sure how this is going to work. What a shame -- the car has only 32,000 miles on it, was fully loaded, and looked brand new before it was hit.

Glad you are safe after such a serious event.

You probably have "gap insurance" to cover any gap between the current bluebook value of your vehicle vs. your lease residual. Anyone leasing should ensure you add gap insurance to your policy (it's a very inexpensive addendum). This is also why I now avoid "single-payment lease" to save money, because gap insurance does not apply in that scenario (for a gap between what your car is now worth vs. what you already paid to rent it).

I thought I had gap insurance, but was surprised to discover that my agent didn't include it when I got the policy on that car. However, it turns out that it didn't matter. My insurance company valued my car at some $6,300 over the lease buy-out price, and sent me a check for that amount. So somehow I came out ahead in this matter. Gap insurance is included in the policy on my new Mercedes, just in case.

Screw the $6,300! You came out ahead because you only had minor injuries. A very good reason to own such a safe car.

If I had been driving a lesser vehicle than an S Class Mercedes, it is very likely I would no longer be active on this discussion board, or anywhere else for that matter.
