Living with staggered wheel setup - RFT
 

Hi folks,

So the S class I'm looking at has front tire sizes of 245 45 19 and rear sizes of 275 40 19. The only difference in tires here is the width of the tire. The diameter of both tire sizes are exactly the same. One of the biggest headaches I am figuring out is living with RFTs, and what life may look like if I rid myself of those.

Here is my thought process. I will have a set of dedicated winter tires/rims (yay Canada). My intent is to carry a full size spare tire/rim in the trunk on long road journeys. Let's presume I get a puncture on one of the rear tires which are 275 40 19, and my winter tire/rim is 245 45 19, will I run into any issues if I temporarily put on that winter size? Presumably only the width of the tire is different so I suspect not, but I will have 3 rims on 245 45 19, and one on 275 40 19. Is this an issue?

Does anyone also know if the rim sizes in the staggered setup is different as well? I presume so since the rear tire is wider...

Thanks all. If I can get away with my idea above, my next worry is whether or not the trunk (with the 3D Burmester stereo) will even be able to fit a full size rim/tire. LOL. This just doesn't end.

Yes you can do this with no problem and yes the tire will fit in the trunk. Not sure what all the drama is about on RFT's. I have the factory Michelin RFT's on my 2015 and they are no more noisy than the Michelin AS-4's I had on my last W221. Handle about the same and give some peace of mind.

Run flats ride like crap.

But to answer the OP's question:: if you have to change a flat, you can put the 245/45-19 on the rear tire but you must avoid large applications of throttle, brakes, or steering since you won't have the same balance to the vehicle's dynamics as with properly sized tires.

Are you aware whether or not the rear rim size is indeed wider since the tires are wider?

My 2015 4Matic has 8.5" wide in the front and 9.5" wide in the rear.
