Hi guys,
I have a central console with phone keypad which i want to replace with the more moder touchpad. I did purchase the new touch controller and leather cover because it's different.
Can anybody please look into the WIS for the instructions how it can be done? Do i need to take off the whole central console or it can be done more easily?
Thanks for the help!

Are you sure this is a swap that will work? I'm thinking there is different command software involved.. I'd be interested to see how it turns out though..

I wish I had on mine what you have. It would be so much easier to dial up a number with your pad. I really never use the newer pad for anything. It just constantly changes a channel on me by accident because I happen to move my hand or finger across it the wrong way. Also, when I have to press a number to reach a certain extension, the toggle switch way of doing things never works for me. I have to resort to picking up my actual cell phone to do so many things.

Yes, exactly thats right, I hardly every use the touch pad either and they heat up and to me seem pretty much useless. I would much rather have the keypad like the original picture, at least that looks more useful. Af far as interchanging them, forget about about they must have used a whole other software driven module with the touch pad, so much more high tech setup, even though useless, lol.

All you guys have to do is use voice command by saying "call Joe", etc. from your phones contact list, or "dial by number".

Doesn't work well when asked to press 1 for English, press extension #47, press # to leave a message. Keypad is best.

When I'm driving, the voice command works very well on the 2014 S550. I don't understand why you have to press 1 for English, extension #47, etc. You should NOT have to do all that crap. Have you checked with the dealer? I have a keypad but NEVER use it.

Have you never called a business and been forced to press certain numbers or symbols to navigate their phone menu??

If for example when I call my corporate office, I have to press 106 to talk to my coordinator after I call the main number. If you try to do this by scrolling on the screen, it doesn't half the time accept the input because it is too slow of a process, or the touch tone signal doesn't work correctly.

You got me there. I'm retired and I don't have to worry about extensions for the most part. But if that's the case and I need to make a call with an extension, I will stop at a safe place and just use my iPhone. Again, that hardly ever is a problem for me. I wonder if CarPlay will take care of this issue on my new 2019 S450. Maybe someone that knows can chime in.

My 2014 S63 has the number pad and leather flip cover and I use it all the time for speed dial “favorites”, hang up, as well as touch-tone codes. I also rest my hand on the leather cover sometimes when driving. The touch sensitive replacement seemed like a step backwards to me.

Yes but like I said, if you need to enter an extension number, or something involving a symbol like # or *, you can forget it. The menu options on the receiving end of the call won't give you enough time to effectively enter them. That's why having a touch tone pad was so nice.

Are you sure you want to do that switch? If you drive with your right arm/hand resting on the console, you may find it a pain since the moment your hand brushes against the touchpad, you may change your radio station, music etc....I just leave mine off.

What do you want to know? The first one has buttons, the second one does not.

I assume both are physically compatible but the keypad connects to Comand via a LIN-bus and the touchpad connects via CAN. Needs modified wiring but the main thing is to make Command aware of the choice because a lot changes on the menus and the appearance (like small screens being shown). Handwriting addresses etc. need significant changes to the UI. I did not check if all this can be done via version coding (on the common SW) or if the head unit software package is different for the two.

I meant in what cases these blocks are put on auto. There is a suspicion that until 2014 the releases were installed without a touch screen, and after that with a touch screen. Or does it just depend on the configuration and does not depend on the year of manufacture of the car?

While the Touchpad may look cool, it is absolutely useless as noted above. The Comand wheel does everything the touchpad does, but much faster and more reliably. If you add an aftermarket Carplay module, like I did, the touchpad does not even work anymore.

You mean touchpad, not touch screen. My build date is 6/2014 and it has the touch pad. Probably one of the first ones, was not available at the time of order but I had it added just before build. My knowledge is not really sufficient to dig into Comand SW releases but I'm pretty sure the same SW covers both options, the keypad and the touchpad. The SW release just needs to be recent enough to have touchpad included. Assume it is just a difference in version coding. Could have a look at some Vediamo parameters if one or the other is mentioned. The factory wants the same SW for 2013, 2014 and 2015 etc. Perhaps different for facelift. The SW gets updates for later model years but the updated release would go for earlier MY cars too.

Joyeauto is the one I used. The touchpad can click to select on CarPlay, but cannot swipe at all.

I love touchpads but having a numeric keypad has proven to be more useful when making calls
