Bye-Bye V12

According to this article, AMG is dropping the V12 engine.

Very sad day. Those engines are so smooth! Even my 2006 CL600 being 2 generations back is super smooth and quite.

listerone 10-09-2018 05:23 PM

Once you go 457 ft lbs of torque (with the BMW 540d diesel) you never go back! :y

MBS63AMG 10-09-2018 06:46 PM

I wonder if the prices of current used V12s will hold steady or even rise from this news?

nishboo 10-09-2018 07:02 PM

Im thinking the price of V12s will hold with a cult following keeping prices higher than normal.

Get the BMW M760!

BenzV12 10-10-2018 02:19 AM

That's terrible being a V12 enthusiast

Hybrid V8 will perform quite a bit better, though, 800 hp and more torque too.

nishboo 10-10-2018 07:35 AM

The V12 isnt about speed, its about luxury and smoothness... Can't do that with a V8

hyperion667 10-10-2018 08:03 AM

Oh no the world IS ending!

So much better than the 738lb/ft in the gas v12, right? Even the non-amg ones were 600lb/ft. GTFO.

No, there's very little demand for them as is, they are a niche car. It's sad, the affluent buyers who can afford a $250k vehicle like a G65, will just buy other cars if they really want a V12. The 65 line sells in very small numbers though, it makes sense for AMG to give up on them. The V12 will still be in other cars though.

Never. Nobody buys them now.

Exactly, there's something about the smoothness of a 12 that is just not the same as smaller engines, although, the new 4.0 in non-amg trim is quite smooth and has a similar starter sound, it can fool the unaware.

And that has what to do with a V12 engine? Oh ya nothing!

It is not about performance. It is how smooth luxurious the engine is. Unless you have owned or driven one it is not easy to understand.

SilberGrau57 10-10-2018 09:56 AM

It's been a legendary motor in production for over 15 years, but I guess all great things must pass. Long live the M275 V12 TT

hyperion667 10-10-2018 10:28 AM

Rumor has it the V12 is being replaced with a V14.8 :)

I have not driven a V12. But, if one is patient, eventually MB will have pure EV drivetrains that both outperform the V12, and are smoother and quieter. Hybrid comes first for AMG, then pure EV.

IOW you've never driven a mid sized sedan that featured that much torque.OK,fair enough. And I've never driven a V12 before...but a few years ago
I drove a VW SUV with a V-10 diesel...an experience I'll never forget.

Just sayin'...

Quadrobenz 10-10-2018 07:04 PM

I am extremely partial to the AMG V-12's, I own 3 of them. Also own a new E63S so I have a direct comparison of the new AMG 4.0 V8 to the V12. My thought is that by not investing in the V12 any longer AMG can put more resources into an all electric platform that is better than the Tesla and tuned for enthusiasts. I am good with that.

Do you think the visceral experience and pleasure of driving a powerful gasoline engined car with a throaty exhaust note will be diminished by the quietness of the electric motor?

Holy....something.......that's a lot of V12's! Yipes! And a good observation too. MB wants into electric......more :)

Quadrobenz 10-10-2018 07:43 PM

The sounds of silence! The V12's are not that loud but they do sound really good. My new SL65 even makes the same snapping and backfire sounds as the E63S. With the top down it is almost too much fun. I will sure miss those engines but electric motors can do things even V12 Biturbos cannot do.

No one is talking about pure EV or Hybrid. You are comparing apples to Oranges. It is about replacing the V12 with V8’s. Something to me is sad because the V12 MB engines are iconic... the people buying a V12 engine are buying it because of the engineering marval that it is. Not because how the power. It’s common sense a EV can do things a engine cannot.

i have driven plenty and then some. However thou another apples to oranges comparison is seen here. Diesel engine vs gas. The Diesel engine is not as smooth or quite when compared to a V12. Also, the torque is brought out in different areas of the rev band. No different how EV has a different rev band of torque as well. Again all very different. A V12 MB does not drive like another MB powered by a engine.

My CL600 is nearly silent when at idle. Road noise is minimal and you can have a soft library voice at 80mph. Put your foot down then yes the V12 will be loud. However for daily driving it is not.

for daily driving I don’t mind a hybrid or EV. For a weekend toy no thanks. Honestly even the quickest EV’s I have driven are overall boring and the 0-60 novilty wore off very fast. Unless someone gave me a Rimac or NIo that would be the only way to get me to have a EV as a toy. Other then that I need some sight and sound. You would not watch a action packed film on mute would you?
