When to check oil level

I just had service b completed a few days ago, I checked my oil level this morning after car has been sitting overnight and it showed the level way over max on the dipstick
I phoned my indy tech and he told me it should be checked after the engine is at normal operating temp, does any one know the correct time to check oil level

On both of my Mercedes the oil level is a bit high after a MB service when the engines are cold. As long as the crankcase is not so full the moving parts on the crankshaft are whipping through the oil, especially at high speeds, everything is ok. I generally keep the levels at the full mark with the engine at normal temperatures and turned off for 2-3 minutes.
