W223 news, rumors, articles

I thought it might be worthwhile to start a thread focusing on the W223, prior to its official unveiling.

Here's one article which suggests that all versions will be at least mild hybrid. And that the 6-cylinder engines will be I6 not V6. Good news on both counts, imo.

Germancar1 01-25-2019 07:18 PM

We're one of the few markets still getting a V6. The S450 is already an I6 in most markets and the S500 is an I6 no matter the market.

aaaaad here is another (more recent) article that comfirms some of the previous article (posted above) and contradicts some of it as well (like only one size s-class being offered to differentiate it from the e-class) so who knows? lots of camo’d pix in here though. still can’t really tell anything though - except the image of a new steering wheel.

I'd love to see the spare tire; mounted on the trunk lid as in the olden days.

Rear Wheel steering for new S-Class

Apparently the S-Class might employ rear wheel steering like the AMG GT C/R but much more extreme is this pic is any indication...

teksurv 01-26-2019 06:32 PM

Wow! That is an extreme amount of angle on the rear wheels.

I hope they don't have that 48-Volt Electerical System added to the V8 as the only option available. I will switch to 7 series to get that powerful 8 cylander engine if that would be the case!

It's already been discussed. The S coupe is no longer.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-class Will Have a Massive Touchscreen

Hate it, hate it with a passion, if I wanted a fricking Tesla I would buy one.
Looks like MB is now aping it with that stupid screen.
Distracting, hard to see in the sun glare, non intuitive, in normal analog (with buttons and knobs) I can change some settings without taking my eyes of the road, that huge TV monitor will require 100% attention to do anything (it will control seats, Climate, Audio, even the stupid window defroster).
So I am supposed to pull over to change anything?
....or continue to drive while constantly flipping my eyes from screen to the road ahead back and forth like current Tesla folks?
That screen will be the one single thing keeping me from spending any of my $$ on a new MB in the future.

ajm0623 02-14-2019 11:55 AM

from another picture i saw recently (can’t remember the source), it showed four rectangular a/c vents (like in the new gle suv) in a row at the top of what we now know to be the ipad pro tablet. the four vents were aligned in a plane to the right of the dashboard screen centered on the top of the screen’s chrome surround.

I agree. If that is on all the S-class models, I am sure they will lose a lot of sales from the old farts who have difficulty operating a telephone let alone a screen like that while driving.

Totally AGREE!! Many car reviewers always compliment when there is a knob for anything that is needed quickly, like the volume, or AC controls. The phone, climate controls, and radio should always be on a knob for quick adjustments not needing to look at. GM learned that customers hated the Cue system in the Escalade. That is why 68% of all Yukon sales are Denali. It has knobs as opposed to the touchscreen. I absolutely hated the Escalade always having to look at the screen to adjust things. The Denali offered the same motor and features and had intuitive controls/knobs in the cabin. I bought the Denali. Volvo has had similar complaints with the screen. Also when it locks up or blacks out.....your screwed. I love how the S class always has intuitive controls...and knobs!! I adjust my volume ALOT. I love it on the steering wheel and love the roll knob on the console. Same with temperature and fan speed. I really hope they do their homework, do surveys of who buys this car, and get this right. Don't get me wrong I want the screen for all the other features it can offer, but simple things should be simple and not be a distraction from driving. I despise cars with no knobs.

hyperion667 02-15-2019 07:33 AM

This is nuts, THAT is the reason I AM NOT driving a tesla also: BUTTONS!

Anyone recall the Riviera car from the 90's? With that STUPID touch screen?

It sure looks like the car companies engineering and design departments are taken over by the new generation of geeks raised on iphones.
The new product in the pipeline looks like an exercise of how to complicate it even more, all in the name of "progress".
What the hell am I supposed to do, buy a Bentley?
One thing for sure, after buying (all special ordered) 9 S-Class (coupes and sedans) in the past 20 years I will not be getting another one, not with that idiotic TV in the middle.

Rest In Peace volume knob

teksurv 02-15-2019 12:07 PM

I don't like the big screen either. I also prefer knobs and buttons for basic functions. That said touch interfaces are prevalent in everyday use. The "old farts" who buy S class are getting younger. I'm 42, drive an E coupe, was looking to S coupe next but that may or may not be an option. If I had the budget some have, I'd be in a RR Dawn.

Utopia Texas 02-15-2019 01:04 PM

I think those are fake screens to play with MB competitors. Look at the huge ugly one behind the steering wheel. In bright light they would be a nightmare to view. I also was waiting to see how the new S Class looked and if this is any indication I may buy a current selection instead.

hyperion667 02-15-2019 01:15 PM

The steering wheel gadgetry looks much more streamlined and not as loaded as this years, although I'm sure it will have more functions.

flint350 02-15-2019 03:05 PM

From the look of it, there are volume buttons on the steering wheel, along with the small scroll button we have now. However, I agree with most that the large screen as shown is butt ugly. I realize it's a prototype and may well change, but it would need to change a lot for my taste. My 2018 S560 may last longer than originally anticipated.

Agree.
If that ugly Tesla like thing is for real, best option will be to get the last S-Class of the current model (2020?)
I don't care if the new one is slightly faster or rides slightly better or drives by itself while I'm: flossing my teeth/applying lipstick/looking for tampon(women only), etc, etc,
The interior, how it is designed and made, how appealing and comfortable it is, is much more important (to me) when you spend a few hours every day in it
