Thumbs down Cracked my AMG wheel

Been having a tire going low for the last couple weeks. Real slow leak 4-5 psi per week. Last week took it to Discount tire and they removed the tire and found nothing. Even in the water tank no bubbles. Happened again this week. Brought it back and they found this. Been told this is fairly common with the 20" AMG wheels on these cars. I'm in Phoenix so the roads here are pretty descent. Haven't hit any large potholes since I owned the car.

So the question is do I repair the wheel and call it a day? Or do I buy a new OEM wheel ? Or should I go ahead and buy an aftermarket set. Pricing for a single new wheel is ridiculous.

I had the same thing happen to my 19 AMG front wheel last year. Fixed it and it has been fine since but if it happens again I will probably go to a set of reps. New OEM are a rip off for what you get.

I had the same thing on my 20" AMG wheel. My dealer suggested having it welded at Quest Rim. I shipped them the Rim and they repaired for $95 + shipping to return (~$20). They did a good job.

I have a could of questions:
1. Did you call 311, your local city municipality and may be try to get a reimbursement for the fix or replacement. Usually there would be a division in each city to handle such requests.
2. I do know lots of people just get these cracks repaired.
3. Did you took it to the MB dealer and see if they can replace under 'manufacturing defect' category as a good will or so?

Good luck.

Wow! Thanks for the heads up on this place. I live in the Cleveland area and this wouldn't be far from me. Thank goodness I don't need them now, but I'll bookmark for future reference.

I had one of my front rims crack last summer. 19in AMG wheel. I replaced them all with aftermarket wheels. The combination of RFT’s and OEM wheels does not seem to mesh well. These rims seem to crack easy. I didn’t even remember running over anything that would cause the rim to crack either.
No problems with my aftermarket wheels.

They were recommended to me from MB North Olmstead service. That is where I purchased my car.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I called the Dealer this morning and it's not covered. Big surprise. They did recommend a repair facility. I was surprised it only ran 150.00 to repair it. So that's whats I'm going to do. The dealer actually mentioned it happens a lot with vehicles that came with runcraps.

yea what they dont tell you is the added stress of the stiff sidewall goes directly into the rim.... most of the cars wheels that run on runcraps are not designed to be on runflats... hence the rim cracks. Ive ran many many sets(prb most than most here) of reps and have never cracked one...bent yes but not cracked.

I have bent 2 and cracked 2 on my previous set on the 20" AMG wheels. I do live in NJ and after a while just shrug my shoulders and get em fixed. Blows.

Is it true that the 19 and 20 inch wheels with rf's are more susceptible to this kind of damage than the 18 inch rims?

What tires do you have and what pressure do you run? Are they OEM rims?

I find oems to crack more than aftermkt ones.I hit a crater in my 221 while flying over a dip in the road and the weight of the car came down onto the fr rim while hitting the pothole. I knew it was bent as Im sure any rim at that point would have been. 200 bux later i just bought a new one. That bent one is waiting to be a hose reel in my yard! lol

I don’t chip in on the 222 forum usually (as I don’t have one.) But, I do have a 221 S550 and I had just cracked the front left 19” AMG wheel about a month ago. Stealership quoted me about $1400 to replace the front wheel but told me I could probably get it fixed somewhere else. I called a local welding shop my family does business with and they repaired my wheel for about $36 after tax. Had it mounted with a new tire that day and the people at discount tire told me it looks great. Car rides much better and saved a lot of money. I was told by both discount tire and my MB dealer that they see these S classes all the time with cracked / bent wheels. They claim the heft of the vehicle and the thinner side walls cause this. I didn’t have runflats either, so I’d imagine they’d be worse.

Buy a new OEM wheel, do not get it fixed. You do not want to take a chance on a wheel fixed, trust me. My buddy almost lost his life in a car crash, it turned out that two of the wheels had issues from a "fix". You own an S class you should be able to buy a new wheel, just my opinion. Better safe than sorry.

The point is the dealer recommend to have the wheel fixed rather them replace it. And buying a new wheel is not a problem. But for what it would cost I can almost buy a set of aftermarket wheels that are a true forged wheel.

depends how it was fixed. I dont think a small crack can cause an accident, rims are fixed all the time as long as the repair is done right. I have changed many rims that being said.

I now have a W222, but when I had my W221 with 20” AMG wheels I ended up going through 5 cracked wheels. I ended up getting aftermarket to help curb some of the replacement cost, but then sold the car shortly thereafter. The same thing happened to my SL with 19” AMG, but so far I’m only on my 4th wheel. I haven’t confirmed for myself, but a friend told me a class action suit was filed on the premise that MB intentionally knew the wheels were more fragile than others. Again I haven’t confirmed but I hope that’s not the case.

I found this Australian study that shows OEM Mercedes wheels outperform the counterfeits. I’m not sure how valid the test is and I’m sure counterfeits vary in quality.
