Mercedes lithium-ion battery
Looking at a S63 amg and am told it has a lithium-ion battery which runs around $2400. Was told they last 10 years or so. Any info anyone has on these batteries would be appreciated. |

Sorry, no help but price for the item made me jump into this thread lol .
I think I could buy a Longines for it and it would last much longer than 10 years |
Welcome to 2019!
While the starter battery in the 2019 A8 is not li-ion, the 48V MHEV battery is, and runs $3200CAD. Oh yay. |
They claim that the lithium battery is cost effective...cost effective?....someone explain how $2400 to $3200 is cost effective; even it it last 10 years. I can squeeze at least 4 to 5 years out of a standard battery, and in most cases even more!

When AMG first developed this engine for the GT - they engineered the to use the Lithium Battery for (2) reasons - Lithium Battery has a better/smoother voltage output - longer life - and for the GT sport series Lithium is lighter weight.
On both Performance/Gas ultra-luxury auto's and electric auto's - Lithium is the best technology From the GT - Lithium carried over into the S63's - note and if you will be only driving your S63 "infrequently" - since the systems inside the S63 do "draw" even when the S63 is locked - you might consider the MB trickle charger. There is a convenient outlet in the trunk for that charger hookup. |

I can not even take the car out of the garage to dealer Now is it really a must to buy a LiFePO46 battery or a lead acid AGM would do as well? |
2014 S63 battery
Hello ,
I am in the same situation where Jud Chapin was exactly a year ago . Due to my negligence my S63 wasn't started for 2 months. I tried all the tricks that I knew and seems to me that I need a new battery. LiFePO4 batteries run over 2 Grands . Do I have to go with that kind or an AGM battery would do as well( considering all electronics in S63) ? My other fear is to Jump start it and bring it out of the garage.Would that few seconds running on the alternator output ( completely dead battery) screw up the electronic circuits? thank you |
With modern electrical systems, you want to charge the battery up to at least the 60% point before starting the engine and allowing the alternator to charge the battery the rest of the way up.
That is:: jump starting is a no-no. The ideal way to recharge a dead battery is to use a proper charger* and let it charge to 100% overnight. (*) charger is cognizant of the kind of battery it is charging {Lead Acid, Deep Cycle, Gas Mat electrolyte,...} |
Aah the price of technology. Someone needs to come up with a 48V Lithium battery charger/reconditioner. Ctek? Noco?
|
Do I really need a LiFePO4 kind of a battery?
My problem is that non of these chargers could revive this battery.
car is stuck under a hoist inside the garage. Duracell is offering two type of AGM batteries(765CCA &855 CCA), You guys think these would affect the electronics? |

A $2,000 battery to save 20 pounds in a 5,000 pound car?

You cannot charge the 48V battery by itself in any of the cars of this generation (P0 hybrid). The way it works it that the alternator charges the 48V system/battery which then steps down the voltage for the 12V battery in normal operations. You can only charge the 12V battery using a charger, and the DC DC converter will then step up the voltage to the 48V system/battery. Charging the 48V battery directly is strictly forbidden/not supported. |
Ours has just packed up after 6 years, has anyone replaced using a standard lead acid? Dont fancy the £1600 bill for replacement if theres an aftermarket option, weight is hardly important!

Pretty certain you need to replace it with the lithium, unless you're prepared to replace a lot of the electrical system. Li-ions are charged quite differently, and the charge level varies over the life of the battery, based on some tricky monitoring of the dynamic capabilities of the battery. That system would probably not function at all with a lead-acid battery. Talk about overengineering! To save 20 pounds in a 5,000-pound car.
maybe an aftermarket li ion then, I’ll see what’s available, you never know, Mercedes might make a contribution due to early failure.. |
Just to update, battery was fine, mercedes plugged it into a health cycle at the workshop and it passed as 90% ok but weirdly i couldnt charge it with my charger, been fine for a while now.

I would like to know how to code the lithium battery after exchanging it to agm80.

Thats nothing compared to the S400 Hybrid battery like 10 to 12k. Absolutely ridiculous.
Well, that's nothing compared to an EV battery, $60,000 CAD https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/1...ery-icbc-cost/ |
