One could always carry a spare run flat in the trunk but once again....what a hassle since there is no alcove in the trunk for a spare.
Also, my SL uses two sized tires so carrying two sized spares would be insane!

Reasons why Mercedes donít provide a spare

1: Save trunk space that the S class is already a lack of especially with the warm and comfort package.

2: Saves Mercedes money on a jack, spare tire.

3: Owner takes advantage of the Mercedes road side assistance which I find quite useful.

4: When you have a flat, road side assistance can only tow you to the nearest Mercedes and not to a tire shop where you can patch or replace the tire allot cheaper than what a dealer would charge.

The R230ís and all previous SLís had spares, so Iím convinced that MB COULD have left room for one in the R231ís, but they donít WANT us to have one. Itís a good thing I love so many other things about their cars, so the lack of a spare never pushes me to another brandóat least so far. In the case of my SL, I never take it far from home, so if need be, Iíll just have it towed to my dealer or to my tire shop, should I lose a tire. I should say, that MB definitely did lose a sale with this idiocy: I would VERY much like to have a new E450 Wagon, as an additional car, but since there is no place to put a spare that isnít inside the passenger compartment, Iím not getting one. In a vehicle like a wagon, that many folks might use for cross country trips, the lack of a spare is truly idiotic. Maybe itís time to go back to Continental Kits!

Just FYI. Our R230 SL55 never came with a spare. Only a tire fix kit. And that was in 2002

Interesting. Did it still have the space for a spare?

I use the S550 as a road car not a town car.

I need a spare because the nearest MB Dealer can be over 200 mi away.

My dad's car came with not one but two space tires errr I mean spare tires not space ( as we don't live outside the earth ) one of which is small sized while the other is regular . Still, I don't wanna to think of replacing it

The design was the same as the SL600 which had an emergency inflatable but I am not sure if the batteries were different (that one protruded into the space). But as stated previously, none of it mattered in case of a blow-out as a broken "flat" tire wouldn't neither fit in the trunk or anywhere into the passenger compartment.
Tire fix kit or roadside assistance made the most sense even on a R230 Of course the other option would be to keep driving but to leave the flat tire/wheel behind.

I just purchased an S63 W221 spare for the w222. Want to be prepared on longer trips. Aluminum one, black with spokes. Can anyone advise the proper length lug bolts as I thought I read they are either longer or shorter???? Thank you
