The USS Enterprise is 2 full Ford Excursions longer than the newest additions to the fleet, the Ronald Reagan and the George HW Bush.
Hey, I'm in that picture. IIRC, I'm standing in the top part of the x.

We were initially supposed to take that picture in September of 2001. We left the Persian Gulf on September 10, and were on our way home from a six-month deployment. On the 11th after dinner, I was going to a meeting about that picture on the when I walked into the office and saw the news a few minutes before the second tower was hit. Seeing that picture brings back a lot of memories.

Possibly more impressive than the carrier is the crane in the background (white with blue "Northrop Grumman" logo). It's the largest crane in North America.

The Enterprise is the longest above the water, but I believe the bulbous bow of the Bush and Reagan may make them longer than the 'Prise under the waterline.

Here's another picture of the crane. Look at all the tiny little cars in the parking lot.

On the subject of awesome size: Remember the movie "Hunt for Red October"? Typhoon Class Soviet submarine; largest ever...

Note the people on the deck.

Thankfully, we've never had to find out just how big a punch these packed.

Sadly (or maybe happily for us) most of the Typhoon fleet is rusting away in mothball status throughout various Russian shipyards. Open source info only, as I understand it, only one is even still operational and who knows whether or not it deploys on any regular basis. Sad to see actually, as they were pretty impressive machines in their heyday.....like a lot of late Soviet tech, they were just what they needed, a few years too late (Tu-144, MIG 1.42, Buran Shuttle, etc). Somewhere I heard that beach pic was photoshopped, though I wouldn't be surprised if they had the ***** to do that somewhere in Europe (judging by the excess of men in speedos)

Cool photo essay: http://englishrussia.com/?p=2525

By the looks of the land mass in the background, I guessing the shot is authentic. This sub was, most likely putting out to sea that day. Almost every bay along the Barents Sea had a naval base, housing two thirds of the Typhoon class subs.

Ahh, summertime on the Barents Sea

Yeah I searched around a little more and I would tend to agree. A little more info on this big *** sub:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_class_submarine

Apparently 6 were originally built, with 3 being scrapped in the last 10 years or so, 2 others put on reserve (mothballed) and one still in active service.

7 were built, Typhoon 7 (Red October) was "acquired" by the US Navy, the Russians think it sunk and don't like to talk about it.

...last seen as it quietly eased into an unknown sub base in an inlet somewhere in Maine....

It's a shame to see such a magnificent vessel carrying such a tarnished name, The USS Jimmy Carter.

Why? I guess it is appropriate to his name sake spends its time underwater, just like his economy.

Nice. I'd imagine the USS Barack Obama would be made to bend in the middle?

Found this on another fourm:

Quote:
Navy commissions USS Barack H. Obama

As a 6 year U.S. veteran sailor I am proud to pass this along to everyone.
The USS Barack H. Obama (CVS1) was commissioned today at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The ship is the first of its kind in the Navy and a standing legacy to future President Barack Obama for his "foresight in military budget cuts".
She is a 100 foot flat top, constructed entirely from recycled aluminum and completely solar powered. Top speed is 5 knots.
It boasts an arsenal of one unarmed F14 tomcat which, although it cannot be launched, forms a menacing presence.
As a standing order there are no firearms allowed onboard.
The 20 person crew is completely diversified, including all races, creeds, sex and sexual orientation.
This crew, like the crew of the USS Jimmy Carter, is specially trained to avoid conflicts and appease any and all enemies of the U.S. and her allies.
An onboard type 1 DNC universal translator can send out messages of apology in any language to anyone who may find America offensive. The number of apologies are limitless and though some may seem hollow and disingenuous, the Navy advises all apologies will sound very sincere.
The ships purpose is not defined so much as a unit of national defense, but instead in times of conflict, the USS Clinton has orders to seek refuge in Canada.
Smoking is not permitted, although cigars (in deference to Bill Clinton) are welcome on national holidays.
The type of ensign being flown is unknown, if any.
The ship may be positioned near the democratic national party headquarters for photo ops.
You may be intelligent or you may be on the left, but you must admit that is some ship!!!!

Funny, I would have speculated that the entire vessel was constructed out of pork, by shovel-ready laborers.
