Tranmission and Limp Mode

Tranmission and Limp Mode
For the past few months our 06 R500 has been experiencing very intermittent transmission issues. Usually once every three weeks upon stopping at a light or stop sign the car enters limp mode. If the car is turned off and back on the issue goes away. I have yet to take it to anyone as I don't know if they can replicate the problem but am wondering if the computer is throwing any codes. My brother, who used to be a Mercedes mechanic believes it may be a bad speed sensor. Has anyone heard of this problem before or knows if there are there any known issues? The car has just over 44K on the odometer.

There is a new DTB out which one of the symtoms is the speed sensor code.. Is it settng the check engine light when it goes in to limp mode? Have you had some one scan for codes yet?

Are you sure your in limp home mode? The tranny in your car (722.9) is very sensitive if it goes into limp mode, 2nd gear only it will store a code with a check engine light. Is there any way you are hitting the up/down shift buttons behind the steering wheel?

Did you ever resolve this issue? My 2007 E350 has had 3 instances of this over the past few weeks. Turning the engine on/off resolves it, but am wondering if you its the speed sensor or tranny issues? You get your codes checked?

Twells1212,
Yes, were were able to get the problem fixed. About a month and a half ago, after doing this for quite a while, the vehicle got stuck in limp mode and would not come out of it regardless. I can almost guarantee this is the same problem you are facing as Mercedes immediately knew what it was without even looking at it. In the transmission valve body, there is a conductor plate that will need to be changed. Mercedes is the only one that is able to work on this and our out of warranty cost was $1,650 (out the door). I would highly recommend taking care of the problem sooner than later before you get stuck somewhere. Good luck.

Yes, I am currently out of town on business and will return next week. Knowing that this is a common problem with the 722.9 transmission, hopefully it will help people in the future.
