Cracked windshield on just-bought S coupe

Well, go figure. Caught a boulder of a stone or something and have a large crack spanning almost half the length of the windshield, through the area where one of the cameras is located behind defroster wires just adjacent the RVM area.

This is a 2016 S coupe I just bought CPO.

As the glass is IR-coated, and with those wires up there, is there anything special I should keep in mind? I have a replacement appointment lined up this week at my home (Safelite via insurance) but am trying to make sure it gets done correctly. I tried to explain I believe the glass is IR-coated, etc, so I'm hoping they plan on bringing correct glass.

Unsure if I should be calling the dealer first thing Monday, if a windshield via Safelite will cause any issues with Distronic / will be as quiet, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I've had two windshields replaced, Safelite does an excellent job and you don't have anything to worry about. You do know those are 1,800.00 right?

Good to hear. Jesus -- thought closer to $1k. Well, $100 deductible and comprehensive insurance -- this is my first claim in many, many years.

Poked around a bit and saw that MB has an official stance about doing it through them only: https://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/glasspro

@2014CL600, sounds like you've not had any problems -- I'm not in a major metro area yet have a Safelite mobile appointment in a few days. Seems odd to think they'd happen to have the appropriate glass where I wouldn't have to worry about (a) IR coating, (B) HUD, (c) Distronic/cameras, (d) defroster wires in same location, (e) as strong or stronger, (f) as quiet or quieter, etc.

I'm not very familiar with OEM versus aftermarket windshields.

I hope you have good luck with them. I would have taken the car to the dealer. The windshield has to come from a dealer,

Looks like Safelite was attempting to get glass for the sedan from my original claim phone call. Called to correct when I saw this on the invoice and was told now they have to order, 1-2 weeks, since it's the coupe.

Got in touch with dealership, talked to the local guys they subcontract to, called them, and they're ordering OEM glass direct from the dealership here in town. Waiting longer, but getting OEM with a local guy supported by the local dealership.

Probably the better decision. The local shop tells me that recalibration afterward isn't needed because of how they don't disconnect hardware, etc -- guess we'll see.

I dont know that there is any aftermkt part. Usually new cars dont have any aftmkt, they are all dealer only. But if it is a aftmkt it is usually a pilkington because they are the only ones that get the copyrights
