Looking at 17 S550 coupe w/ 76k miles. Need some advice

Hi All - I was hoping for some advice here as I'm looking at a White on White 17 S550 Coupe here in the PNW that's listed at a MB dealership for a reasonable price (around 44k+), however it does have 76k miles on it. The good news is that it has been a one owner vehicle, and meticulously maintained by the original owner who traded in the car to the dealership and the sales guy says he knows the owner who really took care of the car. I'm including the carfax report below:

https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistor...115&source=BUP

i'm intrigued given the fact that it drove great, felt pretty clean and didn't see any issues with the car. However, given the high mileage I am obviously concerned about major issues coming up. I'm not worried about regular maintenance being expensive, I'm pricing that in. It's more about the concerns around the air suspension giving out or other major engine or mechanical failures. Would be great to get any insights into folks experience with these at high mileage and if it's something I should avoid. Theres another one that is a blue on white that is a 16 S550 coupe going for $48.5k but doesnt have the driving assistance package or the Burmeister 3D upgraded sound system which I hear are necessities(maybe I'm wrong). I'm also considering a 17 CLS63AMG locally here that has been well maintained but also has 66k on it and 4 owners. I'm just trying to find a car that fits my budget as a 3rd car and that won't ruin my life. My wifes 19 Land Rover Discovery is in the garage right now and is a reliability nightmare so don't want to add another one to the list.

Thanks!

Air suspension will need work in the not too distant future. The bags and lines simply wear out. The dealer should be able to sell you a warranty to cover this. The drivetrain should be fine. An MB dealer will know what to look for.

Yeah that's what I figured and what I was most worried about. I figure the warranty will prob run me at least 4-5k so don't think that's worth it all things considered I prob won't keep it very long. I see you have a 15' CLS550. How do you like it? I was shocked how much I enjoyed driving the 17' CLS63AMG. It's a big car but handles like a sports car so was very impressed. This is coming from an 09' 911 Carrera S owner!

I would want more options, especially driver assist.
look up the options on;

the high mileage one has that and many other options including P1 package,HUd, massaging seats, drivers assistance package, Burmeister 3D, it’s actually quite a nice build. But the mileage just scares me. The lower mileage one at 53k like I mentioned has the P1 package and night vision but no drivers assistance package or burmeister 3D. Let me just also say it’s crazy to me that the 17 CLS had CarPlay but the 17 S550’s don’t. How is that possible????

okbarnett 10-12-2023 04:10 PM

you can always keep looking. theres alot of cars out there

sol56 10-12-2023 06:12 PM

Agreed! Not a lot of S-class coupes but I'm not really in a rush at the moment so will be patient.

Weird time. Last year before the facelift (W222 launched in 2014 and C217 followed in 2015) cars and they received CarPlay. You can have a retrofit module installed and it works nearly flawlessly. I did it on my W222 S550 on my own. Fair amount of work but worth it.

I have been in market for the past 2 months for a 19 or 20 S Coupe or convertible (want the convertible, but AWD in the northeast is appealing). I've found that some dealers were sitting in their time machine back to 2021 where there were shortages everywhere. Now with the new models coming out, 19's and 20's coming off lease, higher interest rates and a tightening economy (who needs an expensive coupe or convertible; not a primary car), there's plenty of inventory that sits on the market.

I want to make a decision soon but I've seen some of these cars sit on lots for 90-180 days and knock 25% off the price from their original offer.

Good luck with your search. I've seen extended warranties for $5400 for 2 years from an MB dealer, but there are likely better offers out there.

thank you and good luck in your search as well. Yeah there’s not a lot of saves on these cars if you look on car gurus and they clearly move slow. I did get a quote from MB dealership here on that 76k mile unit, $7500. I just lol’d him and said thanks but no thanks.

I love my CLS 550. I did get a warranty for it.

okbarnett 10-16-2023 06:06 PM

it took me over a year to find the exact one I wanted

wheatswake 10-22-2023 09:59 AM

I think the S coupe is more exclusive than the CLS due to low production numbers and not many know it exists. Took me half a year to find mine and had to fly to Chicago to drive it back to Houston. I used the Mercedes brochures to see all the options/changes year to year. The 2017 coupe drivetrain is different than all other years. It has the M278 engine with the 9sp trans. If you fix the few flaws with the M278, it should be solid. I believe all engines have flaws, it’s all about knowing them, how big of flaws they are and can they be fixed. I would think the newer engine (2018+) flaws will eventually come to light, they always do. After mileage/history, I looked for color combo, designo interior, all 4 packages and then the individual options I wanted. It’s tough due to low production but at least you can beat dealers up on price since most are not selling many cars. BTW, I bought a CPO and still spent extra $15k between a few broken parts, benzninja, tint, PPF, extended CPO warranty, etc. Just be prepared to fix a few things, customize it how you want and protect it. This could be said for any higher end car but lots don’t think about it when buying used.

sol56 10-26-2023 02:55 AM

Wow you spent $15k???? Over how long and how many miles did you put on the car during that time?

wheatswake 10-26-2023 12:10 PM

I spent that extra $15k in the first 3 months of owning the car since March 2023. Car had 20k miles on it, now at 30k miles. 2yr extended CPO, tint and PPF bumper and hood ran $7500 alone. I wanted to protect it from Houston freeways and roads. It’s like driving in a sand blasting machine. I just found a really nice 2016, 67k miles that someone might be able to get for $37,500 at Cadillac of Lincolnwood. Opted out very well. Original MSRP was probably around $148k. Wish I could pick it up but can’t afford to own 2 S coupes, lol. If it has a dry engine harness, someone is going to score a deal.

sol56 10-26-2023 03:31 PM

Ah gotcha. Have you had to use the CPO warranty at all so far on any issues? And do you mind if I ask how much your Scoupe cost you? there's a 16' S550 Coupe w/ a $144k MSRP w/ 39k miles by here thats going for $50,900 so trying to benchmark. Got everything aside from 3D Burmeister. Thanks!
