What could cause this?

Saw this very sad (what appears to be) 6.9 and wondered, what could cause this.

Check out the pictures and please let me know...

Cadavers?

Hmmm, I thought about that, but there wasn't the stink of rotting flesh. Then i thought maybe it was sandbags to weigh the back to help with the handling (same concept of putting a bag of cement in the nose of an early 911), but no luck there either. So it must be something to do with the hydraulics of the suspension or a failure of the suspension itself?

Not sure if they put airmatic in that year but either failed air shocks or broken springs

This is not an "Airmatic" suspension. Rather Hydropneumatic.
Looks to me like there is a problem with the rear leveling valve. Perhaps the control arm to the rear sway bar is toast. That will cause the valve to dump pressure as it thinks the car is unloaded in the rear (like when it is jacked up for service). A properly working system continually self levels, or maintains the proper stance when parked due to hydraulic pressure in the struts being locked in. The system is complex and not many people including MB trained techs have much of an idea how to work on it properly. Once sorted the ride is amazing.

S-Class (W116)

Hi...

A remarkable technical novelty in the sedans of type range 116 was the double-wishbone front wheel suspension with zero steering-offset and brake dive support.
