560 SEL - starts. shifts but wont move

I have 89 560SEL. It has 115K miles. It starts fine. it shifts into drive, reverse, but it wont move the car? Lever seems OK

what to do?

When you shift into Drive or Reverse and apply the throttle, does it rev freely or seem to have a load? If it seems to have a load but won't move, you could have a final drive problem or (a) frozen brake(s). Has the car been sitting for a long time? More info please. This forum is an excellent source of help, but we need as much info as you can give.

I have been using the car. I had drove it an hours ago. came back home. started it an hour later. it started fine. but wont move.

about your question: it rev freely. there was no load on the car. no movement of RPM. let me know if you need more info.

My 88 560 sel does this also but intermitently. You start it up and put it in gear press the gas and nothing, it moves but absolutely no power. It is like the fuel pumps are not working or only one is. Enough pressure for idle but nothing else. I haven't been able to figure it out myself because it only happens once a week but goes away and works fine. I'll be watching this thread....

that's happened with me once. but some times move others not
on 560 SEL.
when I replaced the gear filter it was magic, instant movement.

You haven't stated if you are aware of any tranny sevice/maintenance on the vehicle.If it were me ,I would have the filter changed, fluid FLUSHED - NOT JUST CHANGED and then go from there.

Hey sam560sel,

I suspect the valve body in your transmission has given up. If it is in gear, doesn't move and the engine revs freely, it definately sounds like a tranny issue.

If I understand you, the car does not move in any gear, including reverse.

There are a couple of possibilities, with the engine running in park read the transmission fluid level on the dip stick, if you see an overfill level the front pump failed, internal. You can confirm a pump failure with a gauge. If it’s at the proper level, does the fluid smell burnt and what color is it, no smell and clean, valve BodyOr a plugged filter

If your car does not move in any forward gears but moves in reverse, it’s a B2 problem, piston or seal. Fixable with the transmission in the car.

Did He Fix It?...

For the rest of us with interest, I note that he says no increase in RPM which has me guessing his throttle linkage ain't linked (happened to me a year ago). But then again he said it "revs freely" and also said "no movement of RPM"?

126 Shift problems

Have following recent trouble with my 126 420 SE E/S transmission: (1) Shifts perfect 1-2 in D but spins on 3 shift. (2) Shifts once in 3 but spins next gearchange
(3) Shifts perfect in 2. No problems in P-R-N-2. Recently changed modulator valve and made shifts smother but no improvement in problems. Can modulator valve be adjusted to fix problem? I've heard about a K-27 spring change to fix this problem; what's part No. and can it be changed in site; or is it the valve body part No. and can it be changed in place. Transmission had recent oil and filter change. I've been around long enoug with these transmissions to know that if first 2 gears shift smoothly and all other gears engage and work per specs that no tranny rebuild is called for. Car has 103K miles.

HI,

When you say spins, you mean slipping from 2nd to 3rd, how about 4th gear. Which vacuum modulator did you buy, if you have the one with a black cap, remove it and pull the T handle out a little, then turn CW two turns to increase working pressure install the cap and drive. If you have the one with a white plastic cap, garb it and turn CW until it stops, you can only adjust this new style once. If the transmission still slips after the installation of the K1 kit, the clutches are brunt, it’s internal.



To install the K1 spring kit, the pan must be removed, inspect the pan and filter for excessive metal or clutch material, if clean; Identify the K1 as illustrated in the picture it’s on the front of the transmission. Remove the four screws on the plate, and then remove the K1 accumulator with springs. Note the sequence of the parts. Assemble the new K1 kit exactly as the one removed, then install the assembly into the valve body. 1/2hour job. K1 spring Kit MB # 126 270 44 77

i had an almost exact problem on my 420sel. The selector would move as normal to every gear, but the engine would rev freely as if it were still in neutral. the valve body turned out to be shot... threw in a 560 tranny shortly after

Or the differential died. Parking brake on and the brakes applied, have someone see if the driveshaft is turning with the transmission in drive or reverse.

I own 2 Benzes one of which a 1986 560SEL with 100,000 miles from new. The transmission is running great with the low mileage but the seals are leaking. For the last 5 years I have been using Mobile One fully synthetic ATF and the shift quality is first class. The only setback is increased leakage. My mechanic told me that I should return to MB OEM non-synthetic ATF as the old seals were not built with synthetic stuff in mind. I changed back recently to the OEM stuff. Ditto with engine oil. Maybe it is all in the mind but the leakage seems to have improved. Any comments?

As to your wonderful sounding transplant project how did you do it? It must have cost you big bucks putting all that GM hardware into a 560. Did you do all the fabrication to accomodate the 4L60E transmission? I often wonder why all the GM enthusiasts bother to soup up their engines and powertrains when there are so many emission legal choices available? One combination that immediately comes into mind is the Denali 6 liter Vortec with 380 bhp paired with the 6L80E transmission! Vrooooooooom.

i have an '84 500 sel and mine acts up in reverse sometimes .. i found that i fiddle with the gear shift a little and wiggle it its fine

I'm stumped whether I need a new tranny or replace B2, piston, or seal.

my 87’ 560 SEL w126 lags when i accelerate

i’m having issues with my benz, i bought it about 2 years ago from a guy who said he just wanted to give rid of it because didn’t have time to work on it. said he’s had it sitting since he bought it. so far i’ve changed the ICV selanoid , fuel pumps and a Relay (can’t think of name) . after i changed the ICV it finally shifted right, before it wouldn’t catch gears. it did reverse better than shifting it to Drive. once i changed the Relay it drive better, icv drive better but now it still lags and over heats. it won’t accelerate, i have to step on the pedal for it to move which is why it would over heat…… mechanic did tell me i had to change the computer? ect …. could you guys please help, anyone. thanks!!!
