1991 300 SEL question

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MEWA:IT&ih=016I am seriously thinking about buying this car BUT I need your guys opinion on anything that you can see from the pics or MAYBE you have seen this car before and know of some problems.

I emailed the guy to look at the car but I have not recieved a reponse yet. I am getting rid of my Navigator finally and I wanted to get a Merc that was cheap, nice looking and still reliable with the ability to carry my wife and 2 little girls.

I am about to buy a second home that we fell in love with so that is why a brand new car is definitely out of the question at this point.

What would the MPG on a car like this anyway?

Thanks,
Greg

I can tell you right now that something seems wrong. The oil pressure is way too low for the mileage and temperature...either rolled back or the engine is worn prematurely from neglect.

If the milage on the car were that low, oil pressure at hot idle should be no lower than 1,5, although it should be higher. That car is not even warm yet (oil temp is probably even lower) and barely had 1 bar.

The milage on that car is either false, or the car was neglected/given substandard oil.

Chrome-covered wheel arches? Street-showy wheels? Barely credible mileage? I'd look elsewhere. At least ask for a properly lit shot of the pedals, to see the amount of wear.

MPG will be in the 18-21 range (per US gallon), lower if you have a heavy foot.

Well done.

There are still plenty about. Their worst weakness is corrosion at the base of the rear screen; get into the trunk and look up to the panel of circular holes to check for any corrosion, even if it doesn't show externally. The 300 will also have a tendency to leak from the rear right (looking from the cabin) of the head gasket (I have two M103 engines; both have had this and have been fixed as an investment in long-term ownership); it's often tolerable, but if not then it's a USD1500+ job (independent rates), including what my mechanic regards as an essential head skim.

Those problems notwithstanding, it's a great car, although not a rubber burner. I've had mine for three happy years and do not envisage/envision selling it.

Check out the excellent buying advice and model history here (in English):
