1991 350 SD diesel turbo
Question 1991 350SD engine problem, need help!!!

Overheating problem was solved but Coolant starts to leak into the engine again. A qualified MB mechanic opened the head and found out problem is the block. It will be too expensive to take the block out, take it to a machine shop to level it ( I believe the mechanic said because of overheat, the sixth one is dented,the machine shop will wield something on it then shave it to the same level). I really don't understand how the machine shop do but I do understand that the block and the head must be level and smooth in order to put the gasket between, then the coolant will not spill into the engine.
Now, please help me out. If this method is too expensive, can I just buy an old engine from the junk yard and replace this one? If I can find 350 SD that will be great, but Benz only produce limited amount of 350SD. If I cannot find the same engine, what other engine can I use that doesn't require too much work? I meant what model and what year engine is compatible? Can someone help me?

Thanks, Roy. He is in the same situation as I am. Now he is putting a 1987 603 engine to replace the broke down engine.
Sixto in peachparts.com gave me quite a good picture of what engine I need. He suggested that I should only look for 1986, 1987 300D, 300SDL & TD. Do you know if 1993 350SDL will be compatible? There is one on the market but the price is quite high. I need to know for sure if it is compatible. Do you know what engine is 1993 350DSL?

stay away from another 350 dsl eng, unless is a re-done.
history will re-peat itself, sad to say this.

I stay with the old 5 cyl.
my buddy has a 300sdl, he doesnt even want to travel with this car across the country, he has bought an older 5 cyl SD.
parts are lots more abundant.
but u cant switch unless u put in the older tranny as a set.
God bless

IMO the 350SDL engine is a ticking head buster, Rod bending bomb..

When it dies, if you rebuild everything yourself plan on $7,000.00 - $13,000.00 USD, depending upon what it wrecks.

The common items are:
* Cylinder head.
* Cylinder sleeves.
* Pistons if run too long with bent rods.
* Piston rods.
* Crankshaft.
* Oil pump.
* Injection pump.
* A transmission if the engine locks at speed.
