W126 500se Fuel Consumption

Hi Everyone,

I have recently bought a 1990 W126 500se in fair condition and I intend on refurbing her completely. Does anyone with knowledge of these cars know what their fuel consumptions are both in town and open road

Thanks

As with so many things, it's going to vary enormously. While I can't categorically say what my general use is - I drive my 500SE every day on a mix of twisty and open roads - I can say it's not bad enough to worry me. My odo stopped working a while back so don't know for sure how many KMs I get to a tank.

Before that happened we did do a good run out to meet with another car club, stop overnight, and more driving the next day. More than 700kms, fill up as we left home, and we had plenty of fuel left when we got back the next day. Certainly heading for 10km per litre. Perhaps 23mpg (US)?

I have a 1987 420SEL with 20,000 miles and I'm able to get almost 20mpg highway (65-70mph - nothing insane). City driving, the mpg is not pretty - around 12-15mpg.

Had a 420 SEL 1987, 200k Miles. In town I would get 15-17 MPG.
Depends on how well the fuel distributor is set.

2018 E300 4Matic here. I use super, and highway driving down the Garden State Parkway, I was averaging about 65 (between the coasting, and the slowing down, etc.) -- and I averaged 30mpg. Plus, that was with me running the AC as well! That's a drain on a 4 cylinder turbo, LOL.
