Want to buy: 1988-91 300SEL. Questions.
I am looking to buy one of these with less than 125,000 miles. It needs to be in very good condition: not a trophy winner, but it can't need any kind of significant mechanical work. And the cosmetics need to be fairly nice, though not perfect. Very good original paint would be ideal. I have some questions.
1) Were there any significant changes to the 3.0 six cylinder during these years that would make one year or years more desirable than another?
2) Were there changes to the basic W126 chassis during this period that would make one year or years more desirable than another?
3) What specific weaknesses should I look for with the 3.0 six cylinder of this year range?
4) What specific weaknesses should I look for with the W123 in general of this year range?

excellent model .silent and smooth running.
A am overseas so mine is a European model,fewer emission contraptions to upset performance

OP the 300SEL is a 126 chassis car. S Class. The twin cam straight six is a good one. Single cam six is not exciting. I prefer the V-8 powered cars. Lot of car for an old school three liter six to drag around.
123 is the mid size car.
FWIW the 124 chassis cars require less babysitting.
