94 S320 with HIGH FEVER (Overheating)

THIS IS INTERESTING AND MAY BE AN ISSUE ON ALL CARS.

A little Background:
I've only had my 94 S320 for about 2 months from the time I purchased it from a private owner. At the time of buy the car had 94000 miles, was in perfect condition and had sat in a garage for about 3 years before I bought it.

Problem:
Now, at around 98000 miles I one day started to hear a rattling sound everytime the gas pedal was pressed and it got louder within a minute since the rattling started. I pulled over to dicover my radiator bubbling and knocking sounds after I had turned off the car. This phenomina continued for about 45 minutes. So I let it cool off and was glad to find out my engine was running fine after start up, I just had to tow it to a benz repair shop so that I wouldnt fry my engine. Indeed they got it to stop overheating to 120 degree by replacing my old thermostate that had quit working. HERE IS WHERE THE PROBLEM STARTS! Benz said that it was going to continue to be high at around 100 degrees because after the initiall overheating the radiator goes bad. I replaced the radiator also and now it has gone down a little more to 195 degrees but at a stop it will rise to around 100 degrees after a minute.

Is there any other part that might be bad that is keeping the car from being at its normal temperature of 80 degrees. I dont even know if it is safe driving my car around at 195 degrees when it is 100 degrees outside! I think not.

Your Input and time is greatly appreciated!

80 deg. Celsius is not reasonable to expect. Typical warm temp is more in the range of 90-100 deg C. If your viscous fan clutch is original to the car, it is 13 years old. It needs to be replaced. This DIY article is for the V12, but the process is identical.

You might try doing the modification to the air temp sensor to make your auxiliary fans switch on at a lower temperature (or just buy Jim's "cool harness").

Be sure your radiator is not full of debris and also the AC condensor which sits in front of the radiator, and be sure that your radiator is not clogged up internally.

Thanks for the plug Brett!

Aaronguy, the clutch for your car runs around $130.00. Try these guys...

Don't forget to look at the fins of your condensor as well as radiator. If they are clogged up with dirt, grime, debris, that will cause the car to run hotter too.
