400 SE A/C problem
Hi, I'm new to the forum and I have a question!
Just bought 400SE, but the ac doesn't work.
The compresor is turning without resistance by hand, but the cluch is not engaging. I have no current on the three wire cable that goes in. I have current on the pressure valves, but not on the clutch.
Please give me advice how to proceed!
I adore this car - the way it looks, the way it goes! It's just ... W140!
Thanks!
Ted

Problem located - leaking evaporator - bad leak!!!
Yup, the evaporator!
It leaks about 1 pound per hour!!! I,m gona treat it with CRYOSEAL, despite I was told that my chances are slim. The alternative is way too expensive (~$3500), so I will put my bid on the pretty three-leg hourse (hoping that the rest of horses just will let him win).
Does anyone of you have experience with this product? Can I apply any additional technics to improve the effect of the sealant?
Will keep you posted!

Well, here is the end of the story.
The CRYOSEAL didn't manage to plug the evaporator.
I found a mechanic, willing to do evaporator for $1000 - parts included. So next thing you know my AC was back in service!
One thing you need to avoid is showing in the garage, just after they finish disassembly - the whole dash is gone, you see only metal and wires ... ugly! But they put it back together and I drove the car for another 3 years. And then ... cash for clunkers happened...
I have Mercedes again, and go to the same shop since!
Best Regards!

Ted appreciate you updating the thread, is the shop you used an independent Benz shop in Dallas? Always good to find shops that do good work at a reasonable rates.

evaporator
Burgca, I've written the man, asking for the name of the shop in Dallas, as I would like to check it out, but no reply. I'll try a private message once more, but it has been ten years since his original post, so . . .
