I think you'll have to elaborate on that one...
According to Mercedes, over 7000 long 600 1992 models were made;

Paper thin tires

Will the tires hold up at 180 mph? Will they handle hard cornering? I wonder why Nascar does not use them.

why on earth would anyone drive even close to that speed on public roads?!?

nascars doesn't use them because nascars are used for 'racing'(or specifically, driving fast in a circle). The whole purpose of those cars' existence has nothing to do with Charlie's car.
nascar uses racing slicks.. do you, on your daily driver? if not, why not? yeah.

different stroked for different folks... these probably suit his driving conditions just fine. Charlie, the wheels ARE a bit big for me, i liked your old BBS size, but the lip on these is nice!

tires

Ok.Then its about looks then.I was wondering why race cars don't run low profile.
So in my case I'll stick with some sidewall meat.

1992 500SEL Black and grey 2 tone w/ camel brown interior
the car looks really clean man! i like the rims alot. did you do anything for the tail lights? everyone say to smoke them out but i really dont want to. i saw one guy on the highway who blacked out the white bar across the bottom, it made the taillights looks seperated. I have a 500sel and i love it. i just have to get it repainted all black. its the grey and black 2 tone right now.

Nice SEL probably the best one I've seen modded & on rims(the 22's look good!) just a couple questions.. Hows the ride quality? & Does the steering wheel vibrate at a certain speed? Im actually looking to buy a W140 soon & would like to add 22in wheels also.

Funnily Your 20" look smaller than Charlies' 20" !
I don't understand why exactly, but it has to do with the styling of the wheel itself. Ps. Charlies" are 20? I haven't seen him mention the size, to me they look like 21", have I missed a post somewhere where he mentions the size!?

That's wheels really ugly on this car. Monoblock safe the best for W140.

This wheels really looks ugly in this car. 19 inch ANG Monoblock wheels would look super nice in W140.

The W140 is, IMO, one of the best generations of cars to ever come out of Germany. It has such a presence on the road and really encompasses this light elegance when you see it drive by. Its one of those cars that can be very under the radar at first glance only to find yourself taking attention to all the little details and trying to figure out why you like this car so much (maybe just me). Every time I see a good example I wish I could trade my car for it. Keep in mind, this car retailed for over $100k at one point in time, being that most examples are getting past the 20 yr old mark, things are going to need replacing, not due to poor build quality but at 20 yrs plastic and oil based components start to oxidize and crack, become brittle in the winter, electric gremlins start to creep up, repair on the air ride suspension can also cost some pretty pennies. Now i am not trying to deter you at all, there is a chance you come across a great example that has had a owner who took care of most of these things throughout ownership but i have been looking to buy one and have only found 1 example that I went and looked at. Mercedessource on youtube has some amazing insight into what it takes to own and maintain one of these legends realistically:

wheels

Make those wheels out of wood and you could use them in the movie, "Wagons West."
James
P. S. Yes, I think those wheels are ugly as sin, but if the owner thinks they're great, then so be it. Beauty is in the eye . . . Someone important said that . . . I think he was important.

This must have been a diplomatic services car. Those pieces on the front fenders are flag mounts.

IMHO the wheels are too large. The car can handle up to 20" rims. Those appear to be at least 22", based on the sidewall width...

Edit: NM. Just realized I responded to an ancient thread...
