Loud noise when opening/closing driver door
93 400SEL driver door makes a loud noise when opening or closing. Sounds like a spring slapping inside the door. Any help identifying the problem and solutions to corret the problem is greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your W140. One of the issues that seems to come up fairly often on these cars is failure of the Door Check. This is the component that hold the door from closing on you once you open it.
Over time, due to age and use, the Door Checks will become weak and break. A clanking, metallic sound is one of the symptoms of this. In order to completely diagnose your problem though, you will most likely have to remove the door panel (which must be done to replace the door check anyway).
I can not be certain that this is the issue with your car, as it must be properly diagnosed to come to a conclusion, but it is a good place to start.
I have the Door Checks for your car available HERE, or by clicking on the image of the Door Check below.
I hope this information helps you get your W140 back in good shape, and if there is anything else I can help you find, please don't hesitate to post or send a PM. We carry a huge selection on genuine Mercedes-Benz replacement parts, as well as aftermarket replacement and performance parts. If you don't see what you are looking for in our (always growing) catalog, just ask, and we will do our best to help you.

I had this happen on my S420. It was a pretty cheap fix by the dealer. Around $300 or so. +1 on getting it fixed quickly. You are doing damage to the door which can get pretty expensive!
