Hello everyone, greetings from Brooklyn, NY,
So, a few days ago I became a proud owner of a 25 year young steel bunker .... Here`s how it happened..
Knowing very well that I cannot be left alone on internet at night I nevertheless plunged into darkness of the web to browse ebay, craigslist, autotrader and likes... I wasn`t sure what I was looking for but I knew the direction I was going - it would be a German car, probably BMW (was looking at E34, E39, E38), Merc W124. I liked W140 and admired very much since I believe they are one of the last well-made Benzes of the yesteryear, they have a reputation of that of a Panzer tank, built with quality in mind. It was the car for rock stars, heads of state and dictators and surely it would be nice toi get one. S320 is too underpowered, S600 is way too complicated and too expensive to run, so it is S500 or S400.
As I lay there contemplating my next purchase, along came an auction on eBay.. 1992 S400SE, no reserve auction... Not thinking much of it, I submitted my bid and forgot about promply thinking that sure;y it will go for more than 1325$. Next thing I know it`s 3 minutes left... 2 min.. 1 min... Knowing very well that most bidders start bidding when its 5 seconds left I am still holding my breath... And then 3....2.....1... going, going, GONE! Congratulations Sir, you just bought a car as sight unseen from who knows who ... great.. Next day I call a seller, take a train to Pennsylvania and a few hours later here it is - my new pride and joy... 400SE, 1992....
Its a great car, I love how it drives, power, weight, solid built, however, being 25 y/o it comes with a bag of problems, some of them are:
Central locking doesn`t work, drivers side pneumatic door-pull doesn't.
Speedometer doesn't work, RPM`s, temperature and oil pressure gauges work, buy speedo doesn`t.
There`s a play in steering wheel
Radio doesn`t work - its aftermarket unit, still.
Cruise control dosn`t work

And there are other small little things here and there, slowly but surely I will be taking care of. If anyone has or had this car please feel free to share your advices, experiences and observations, I will be very grateful. Happy Thanksgiving all!

Congrats on your find! The W140 was a landmark S-Class, especially if you had owned the W126. I had the '93 300SE from new for 13 years. Yours looks great in that color. Those are the newer wheels, also.
