CEL on now off

Hi all, greeting from Miami

I own a 01/95 S320 SWB. Have owned it for a couple of years now, and am very happy with it.

Last night I got a CEL and car went into what I assume was a safe-mode? It would hardly shift into third, mostly was up to second, and to get it to shift I would have to stop for a bit, shift into 1st, then to second, and D and sometimes as I wrote, would go into 3rd, and after a while jump out into 2nd.

Of course it took me over 2 hours to get home.

Hope someone can help me with the following:

Does the car indeed have this safe mode? I'm aware of the one with the yellow lights where you lose steering assistance and cruise, or was this my tranny acting up?

Car has an obd 2 but hardly any info there and no codes. I built the reader for the dtc, but how can I tell which threw the CEL?

Btw, no cel on now

Appreciate the help

It happened to my 400SE. Under the hood there`s a computer responsible for ABS. Most likely it is that. I had the same issue - my car would go into "limp" mode, I would park it for 15-20 seconds, restart it and keep going on. I took the computer out, cleaned contacts and put it back in - problem solved. It turns out there was not enough amps and one contact was rusty/oxidized, good cleaning solved it
