Light came on

A light came on in my 93 300SE. It looks like a light bulb with an ! in the middle of it. It is close to the temperature readout.

not sure what it is.
A blown fuse??
Check Engine??
Low Fluid??

Also the Transmission shifts out of 1st at about 3900+ (ive got it up to the RPM Max today. It was purring at about 7600RPM in first geat ) RPM everytime. 2-5 are okay.

Fixed the bulb, It was a reverse one

Now, Anyone know why the Transmission is shifting at 3900?

At 7500 RPM, there is no power and it only goes like 22 MPH.

It sounds like a Honds Civic, and Ford Focus' are beating me at the stop light.

it will shift high until the engine is warm - if it still does it when the engine is hot, try replcing / checking the temp sensor on the front of the engine... not sure where it is on a 300 - but a haynes / clymer of a E 300 will be the same engine.

It was not the Temperature Sensor. It was the whole Transmission assembly.
Also The 3RD Brakelight Electrical Has melted Got To replace that.

Rebuilt Tranny- $1600
Labor- $545

I never would have thought that a Mercedes Tranny would go out at 100K Miles

With a New Tranny the ride is better x1000

Any tranny will fail if not properly maintained. I still have the orginal in my '87 300E with 195k on it. A recent replacement of the front pump seal showed the internals to be in great shape.

im very surprised that it went - i talka lot to one of the best UK tranny people - and the gearbox you have (the older / simpler one) is very reliable. 100K is very lowmilage.

do you / previous owner do alamost all round town driving? is it very dusty there? was the tranny oil low?

I do not do a lot of town driving. Barely any stop-and-go, mainly Highway miles.
It is not really dusty in DW L.A.
The tranny oil was replaced every 30,00 miles with some blue bottle bilstein ATF.

To my knowledge I' am the 3rd owner.

I'am still having shifting problems,
at about 60MPH the tach jumps from 2100 to 4100 and back.
I think that it has to do with the tranny linkage because when you move the shift lever from Left-Right (4-D) it does the same thing.

there are quite a few articles on adjusting transmissions - try a search for 'flaring and mercedes gearbox' on google?

or go back to the vendor of the re-con box and complain..?

the change in RPM is shifting between 4th and 5th. The gearshift selector is very touchy, may even do it without touching it. Mine would always do that when I was changing radio stations. Why? Because i had my hand on the shifter to do so! Took me a while to figure that one out.

I had a rebuilt tranny installed in mine @ 183K miles. THe rebuilt unit went out on me 21,000 miles later (thankfully replaced under warranty even though I was not the owner at the time!! - a $5000 job at the dealer) The overdrive developed a noise, and the whole unit was full of shrapnel when they looked at it. That was a whole big drama story that I might have to tell on here sometime if anybody is interested!
