W220 Design and build issues from 2001 - 2005 II

We have all heard a great deal about design and build issues on the W220 platform. I'd like to read about some real world experiences as I hope the issue have been settled by the 2003 build year.

For example, I understand dash lighting and air shocks have had problems. Have the newer year models resolved these and other issues?

This should be helpful info for all. Especially what to look for purchasing used.

a Few Nice cars.
My Uncle had a 01 s500 and it was in the shop for 7months out of the 9 he had it,it got stuck in 1st and wouldnt get get out..$3,000 later it turned out to be that something wet got down the shiftknob and burnt out some sensor..he then had trouble with the dashlights and the suspension wasnt working..he traded it on a A8 (was wrecked 2 months ago0 and now he is back in his old w126 420sel till the repairs are done...again IM not trying to start trouble but the EARLY W220 has had alot of bugs in the computer system..and IF you must have the w220 the newest models are allways the best to go in that Model year.

2004 S500
I have a 2004 S500...purchased in August this year. The car has only 13K miles at this point...the last 2500 miles being mine. My experience has been problems with nit pick issues that involve "special features" issues (search all my posts). I tend to be a perfectionist and I expect a car of this caliber to be near perfect...I expect a lot. I would not purchase one of these cars with out some kind of solid warranty...preferably the factory warranty. I purchased a 2004 because it was the best combination of price, balance of factory warranty and 2004 is the last year of free maintainence for 4 years/50K miles.

I think the learning curve has become more end user friendly on these cars from '03 to current.

I have had three BMW's that had issues as well and I wouldn't throw BMW under the bus because of any bad experiences that I had.

At the end of the day...these are fabulous automobiles that are the standard by which all others are judged.
