Yes there is a way but you will need to buy a tool from your dealer. There is a dipstick tube at the back of the engine on the left looking into the engine bay. There is no dipstick and you have to break a red tamperproof seal on the cover, which costs very little. The tool is the dipstick. Do as search on merdcedesshop.com and you'll find all the answers... only merc fluid though. This 5 speed electronic tranny was used on all the mercs from about 1996 and is supposed to be lifetime fill, but should be changed at 60,000 miles if you don't want problems!

I agree to that. You should change it every 50-60k no matter how many times MB says it's lifetime. Also check for leacks. The most possible reason for it to be low is leak at the gasket. Instead of adding just change. It's probably time for that anyway.

I have done the change in my SLK and it is a bit of a fiddle. Drain plug out from tranny sump, then torque converter, black fluid issues forth and they say it doesn't need changed!!! What a joke!!! Then remove the pan, replace the filter (push in) and gasket. Put everything back together. Very carefully measure what came out and replace with exactly the same amount - approx 7 litres ish via the dipstick tube. Start the car and move the shift slowly thru all positions, then with engine running check the level. Push the dipstick tool all the way home.... it doesn't seat as tubes are different lengths for different models. Cleanliness is vital. You'll need ramps or a lift.
