I cannot speak for the rest of the world, but in the U.S. Mercedes has extended the warranty on the instrument cluster to 10 years from initial date of service. If it fails, it will be replaced free of charge.

Yes. I think maybe it is only in U.S. But in the many many Country. Include U.K,Germany, Japan....and so on. They need this . And more than 95% W220 S Class will meet this problem: no backlight, or the backlight flickerd. There is a DESIGN BUG in this cluster illumination (dashboard).

I can not speak for the other countries, but here in the UK there was also a recall, so most failures as you describe should be covered by MB.
