s 500 4-matic

let us know how it feels in the snow, I have a c 240 4 matic for my wife you can not spin the wheels it feels like a tank it's also alot less power . But I did notice that it seems to be getting alot less gas mileage so far.......after only 1,000 miles.

I have the S500 4-matic with sport package and it handles much better in the snow than my old S500. In the old car I would not be able to get up my driveway with a eighth inch of snow on the ground. With the new car I have no problem with the driveway. I know that the sport package takes away from the traction because of the tires, etc.Just wondering how much better it would handle without the package. The other night and today the car drove very nice in the snow, although there was only a light coating of less than a inch. It seems alot heavy than the old S500. It handles good but u must be careful not to expect to much because of 4 wheel drive is not a surburban. Cant wait to see how it handles in 3-4 inches of snow. So far the car is great, just what I expected. Furthur updates to come

REAL TEST

Firstly, I am impressed with the 4matic. I have the S430 SWB 4matic (2003) in Toronto. I was subject to driving the car in 8 inches of deep snow and ice since I had to go through a street that was neglected and not plowed.

The car's traction controls were going crazy but I was able to get through with no problem. I am very impressed by the car's ability and although gas milage is worse, I feel that once the car is broken into, and if the car is driven normally, gas milage should be acceptable.

The best thing you can really do for your cars traction is get winter tires.

Maybe a set of separte rims so that you can put them on yourself.

That will make a huge difference.

Yes those tires are not meant for any snow use or freezing temp use period! They are meant for summer only. Get a set of all season tires or winter tires, they will make a huge difference. BTW, even with 4matic, u should still take off those high performance tires.

I was able to take my mom's car 2003 S500 4-matic out in the snow. She has the regular Michellin MXV4 tires. The car handled like a champ. When I used the airmatic suspensin it was able to clear a decent amount of snow. Of course it couldn't go over 18" like my uncles Range Rover, but it still did a damn good job expecially for a car. She kept commenting that it performed better in the snow then her previous 98 E320 4-Matic.

Anyone else have the S500 4-matic without the sport package? If so Im curious as to the type of rim your car came with. I have the same rims as last years S but in 17" styling!

Michelin MXV PLUS

I have to complement those tires. There treadwear and comfort far outlast any other tire, yet there tread design allows are slush and water/snow evacuvation. And in their tread they have the grroves in each rubber patch allowing it to 'bite' through snow.

They are a true all season tire (although a winter tire would do a better job). I like what Mercedes gave us as a standard tire.

Sean I agree with you 100%. We have been using the MXV Plus since we purchased our 1st 4-matic in 98. We have them albeit much smaller (195/60/15) on my Sister's Jetta and also they are standard on the new S500 4-matic in 17" size. They are excellent in all type of normal road conditions and do a pretty good job in the snow. They are not the best in any category but are an excellent overall performer. What type of rims came on your car? Are they the double spoke design or the same as the last year 2002 but in 17" instead of 16"??

I put the Michelin Pilot Alpin tires on my 2000 S430 - took the car from a total dog in snow to a total champ. Well worth the price. I've got a 2003 on order and was leaning towards a 4matic until I put snow tires on - now I'm not, happy to be able to order the S55.
