Sticky Steering Wheel Buttons or Interior Pieces?
 

I was installing my new steering wheel today and helping my mechanic get an IBM Thinkpad set up for use with WISnet/Starmark. While we were in the car I pointed out the sticky wheel buttons, of course. He mentioned a company to me that refinishes lots of Ferrari interior parts for him called http://www.stickynomore.com, and suggested I email them. I exchanged emails with Robbie Padgett there and he said he has not "unsticky-ed" any MB parts yet. I'm sending him some hi-res pics of my steering wheel buttons asap. Some of you guys may also want to contact him. This could be a great solution to our button issue! I also can get your steering wheels redone here in Dallas for about $350 in any leather or matching woodgrain and leather. I am thinking about offering the steering wheel service.

New buttons at the dealership are around $300

I just washed mine with some "Witch Hazel" , an alcohol based solution for $1.50 at local grocery store. All steering wheel and glove compartment buttons like new ones now, no damage of any kind.

Somehow I'm thinking witch hazel ain't gonna cut it, if powerful citrus degreasers won't cut it either. I tried Goo Gone and the airbag color rubbed off before the button film came off. I'm going to buy new buttons if www.stickynomore.com has a more expensive option. Hey Camera what dealer quoted you?

I have this same problem on my 2000 S500. All four buttons are now sticky. I was wondering if anyone has a solution other than buying replacement parts from MB ($306).

Additionally, if you know what is involved in actually replacement i would appreciate any advise. Does the airbag have to be de-engergized and removed?

Witch hazel works even when goo gone doesn't

Try it

Use some rubbing alcohol. It will remove the sticky film. But you have to careful because it will remove the color also if you keep on using it.
Once this is done the buttons will be smooth but will not have the rubber feel to them
