Replacement Key FOB

So long story short. Was working out last night and key fell out of pocket. It was crushed by a weight and now it wont reconize in my car. I have a 2001 S430. I wanted to get the new key style. My questions is am I able to buy a key FOB from place like ebay and have it reprogrammed at MB? Usually how much and will that work?

Thank you in advanced

Alex

Hi

About 5mo ago i accidentally washed my original 2001 S430 car key. After being in washer machine for an about 45 minutes it still works. LOL

MB will not reprogram your key fob, unless you buy it directly from them. In most states is $250 for a new key.

Musikmann 02-16-2011 02:38 PM

Just buy a new key from a dealer. It will be the newer chrome style key as that is all they are selling now.

My dealer told me that 02-03's with or without keyless go, as they use the credit card type transponder and 04-06 without keyless go, get a chrome key replacement. I was disappointed that when I ordered a new key for my 04 CL600 with keyless go, what I got was the same as the old non-chrome style I had. I asked why, and they said only the NON-keyless go 04-06 W220's get the Chrome key when they order new keys, but the keyless go keys for 04-06 w220's get the old key, but nobody knew why. Has anyone ordered a new key for an 04-06 W220 WITH keyless go and gotten a Chrome key?

Yeah, don't waste your money on the keys from ebay.
They're only good for the outer shell.

Jerry- 04-03-2011 11:37 AM

As was written before, the Ebay keys cannot be reprogrammed, not even by MB. You can swap the guts of your key into the new outer shell if your's is tatty.

The Keyless Go key has a wider PCB piece inside the black key. I can only surmise that the old technology will not fit into the new chrome key, where a new PCB must be used.

If you buy a chrome key from ebay and try to swap the insides of your black key to the new chrome key, make sure the buttons are at the correct location and the ignition induction coil (of the guts) is in the same location relative to the front of the key.

By looking at the key pictures on ebay i decided that they are not compatible and therefore did not by any to swap the key guts (PCB) into.

I may be able to help if the chip inside wasn't damaged.
Can you open it up and see.

I like that approach. Does it work with a keyless go key? The PCB looks different from the PCB in the picture. Is it enough if the Chrome key is keyless go as well?

I see that the IC is surface mount soldered. I can solder it off but how much heat does the IC stand? Do i need a heat sink? When re-attaching onto the new PCB can i do that cold; with paste?

It is best that you post pictures of what you see and I can decipher what can or can not be done.

You must be careful removing the IC as not to damage it whatsoever, you can resolder with normal temp 500-600F, can not do it cold. Oh yeah, need to be done under a microscope, you don't want to short any thing.

By the way, I have successfully done this about a dozen times helping out fellow car enthusiasts, worked every time:

My key is the newer chrome one 01 s500. It fell out of my pocket and the actual well it looks the a thin copper wire wrapped little ir trans maybe. My question is I will go buy a new key from the dealer. But will I have to take it too them to program new key. Or is anyone known to fix that piece or lol can those chips be swapped out. Thanks so much for even a response.

Take the car to the dealer . They will not make a key without both the car and registration in your name , to prevent theft of people just asking for keys to cars they don't own

Mercedes is very strict about this. If your key doesn't work and you can't start your car , they will make you tow the car to them . They used to just give out the key but I guess it resulted in some cars getting stolen and lawsuits

Agree with Tusabes, you damn near have to sign your life away to get a new key from the dealer and without the car it's next to impossible.

a new keyless go key for my 06 s55 cost 466 dollars from the dealer
i should of asked was it a chrome key or not

Jack_88 06-10-2016 07:04 AM

I have this key from my car, it works but the keyless entry and start functions do not. Can anyone tell me if this is the right key for it? I'm not sure if it just wasn't programmed for the keyless functions or the key was replaced with the wrong kind or if something else is wrong.

Your baby home? I'm researching for another key and I think that key don't have the keyless go. That key is post 2008 and you will have to go to a MB dealer to program anyway.

If the key has keyless go, it will be the old one, not a chrome key !!:(

It'll be home this weekend. That photo is from my ill fated attempt to bring it home before the fan was fixed. Oh well, I guess I can go to a dealer and order the proper key and pay the extravagant fee. I was hoping I was lucky, but I figured it was the wrong key.

This thread is old

There is now a couple of non Mercedes shops with the capability to make keys and they don't care about seeing your car or the registration. Sorry I don't have the contact info but the have been mentioned in other recent threads this year about keys

I went through 6 or 7 pages, looking at different threads that seemed promising, but found nothing. Maybe I'll call a couple import shops and see what I can turn up.

Great resource!

The key in Jack88's picture with the triangular panic button was introduced around 2012 and is the current production key. There is a chrome key introduced in 2007 with a round panic button. These 2 types of keys do not interchange. The triangular panic key has among other differences a pop off rear cover that allows replacement with a back that has the sterling silver Affalterbach AMG logo. I have been told by the dealer techs that a chrome key cannot be used as a replacement for the black key in cars with keyless go.

So I checked with paylesscarkeys and got this response: "If you coming to me, S430 will be $230."

That price is the same as quoted at my local dealer. Paylesscarkeys also need to have the car in order to do programming.
I haven't check the other site.

Jack_88 06-14-2016 03:55 PM

Payless requires you either be there in New York, or you can send them the module and have the key programmed for $250. The key program site is for the hardware to do it yourself, and is more expensive than just buying a key, unless you plan on coding other people's keys for them.
