Ahso... there are some of you fellow nutters out there. Thanks for sharing your experiences / impressions.
Marty... well DUH... I *know* there are 'better choices' out there 8-). As I noted... I can stay/go home when need be typically, and am running some pretty aggressive winter tires.
I'd rather cut off my nutes (I'm done w/ them anyways, they just get in the way?) than have to deal w/ a winter beater for like 30% of the year - no thanks!
I swore off dedicated winter tires years ago tho - meaning - I refuse to subject myself to driving on jello-like marshmallow's. Fthat. I'd tear the friggin things sheer off the car. I always pick up a 2nd set of wheels and a good set of speed rated snows for winter.
Nooooo way I'd even roll out of the garage on my Y rated's... fuchthat!
These Vredestein's are V rated, so I can still hammah up to 149 (allegedly, you know, in theory - conjecture / hearsay!), take an aggressive corner, or make a decent evasive lane change w/o the whole chassis wagging around on the sidewalls.
I'm really diggin them so far. We've had 2 daze of 2-3" here so far, but I've only felt them out in my driveway and a gas lot. Calling for 4-6" tomorrow, will be the real test.
Entirely too much Just Not Right time in my quattros typically inspired some silly Haiku action (if you've yet to experience one in the snow, it's quiet the wild time!)... here's one in honor of the MB:

So I pop'd my 600 snowcherry Sat!
Dayum, that thing does pretty fookin good out thar! I was pleasantly surprised to find a level of control that was very acceptable / pleasing... rewarding even.
Can toss the rear out and maintain a wonderous 4wheel drift into perpetuity 8-)
Biggest challenge is setting off, obviously - esp with any incline, esp if you don't have 'a run' at it (my neighbor's driveway, for instance, was futile). But once underway, these V rated Vredestein's were the cat's @$$!
Don't have the confidence to carry speed thru an intersection w/o worry of understeer (and don't have a proper friggin EBRAKE to counter such! Yargh that pisses me off!) like I would in my quattros... but... approached appropriately with expectation / technique established... Bob's my uncle.

That's the feeling I was talking about.
Don't be so surprised a RWD has that good snow traction.
And nowadays, high performance winter tires provide fairly good handling too.
You can beat any AWD SUV on all seasons in poor whether.
But all in all, drive with cautious is till needed for snow/ice condition.
Play it safe, bro.
