Does the part number matter for SAM?

Hi guys, I was recently advised to change my front right SAM due to a headlight glitch and several errors on the dash. I was just wondering, does the part number really matter when buying a used SAM? The one I have installed has a part number mostly used in 02-04 S500. Should I buy the same or look for one specifically for my car, a 2000 S430? If I install a SAM with a different part number will I need to reprogram? Thanks in advance.

If it were me, I'd work toward installing the correct part number designed for my car. With that said, it's possible MB retired your original SAM part number and made the one currently installed as the new norm. (Which suggests someone swapped it out previously!) Alternatively, you should try and figure out how/why the currently installed SAM is working if a different part number is called for. Frankly, I'd seek the knowledge of a local dealer. Don't have to buy the part from them, but do try to understand the mystery.
Cheers,
Jeff

Not sure if it helps, but , in the beginning of ownership, one of my sam's went. The front passenger. I just yanked one out of another car from an earlier year and all was good. No programming, no coding.

+1 good advice. Subtleties do occur across model years.

Thanks guys. I'm getting really fed up with this car. In less than two months the rear strut blows out, the car developed a vacuum leak, air line leak, passenger vaccum line exploded inside the door, door locks and soft close went out, interior lights wouldn't turn on, the radio tape deck won't stop moving up and down, broken spark plug wires,, gas gauge stuck on full... The list goes on. I want to give up, but that's not in my nature. Thanks to you guys and this forum I've been able to fix a lot of the issues so I guess I'll chug along. Now getting back to the SAM, how could I figure out what the original part number was? When I search online I get two to three different numbers. I don't want to pay for a SAM and then need to pay to have it programmed. Anyone have a 2000 S430 with the original front right SAM? If so, what part number does your SAM show? Again I really appreciate all the help. Especially you Jeff. I should just start inboxing you all my questions. LOL

My MB parts guy tells me the Front RH SAM part number is 034-545-65-32. This is p/n for a 2000 S430. This is the part that I would recommend seeking.

Be careful about used SAM units. It is incredibly easy to swap the electronics inside with the outside 'can' that has the part number on it. Unfortunately, people are people.

As for the other issues, have patience and work through 'em. Your reward at the end of the journey will be an awesome motorcar.

Cheers,
Jeff
