You must get the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) to begin to solve your problem. Don't panic yet. It really could be something simple but you need to know what code is setting. Could be several codes. No one can help until you pinpoint the cause ie DTC, they can only guess.


If the problem concerns emissions - which is virtually all problems that turn on the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light or check engine light) - a standard code reader will give you the trouble code. This means that (in the USA) you can take the car to Autozone, Advance or most large auto parts stores, and they will pull the codes for free. Be ready to write down the exact code, so you can tell us what it is (or they are).
