W220 S500 Door Lock Driver - Passenger Problem.

Both doors do not lock in automatically like they used to. The rear do vacuum close but the front ones make this hissing sound like the air pump is trying to close it but the lock itself doesn't close. Could it be bad motor in the door or just a simple piece replacement for an air leak.

You will have to listen for the hissing of the leak and start from there. It could be the actuator or a cracked line. Is it coming from the door? If so you will have to remove the door panel and listen for the hiss again. Or is it coming from the trunk? the PSE pump is located in the trunk on the driver side fender area. Pull back the carpet above your CD changer and it is right there. It is coverd in a large black foam rubberish material. Just keep following the hiss. Once you find the leak post back and we can walk you through fixing it if you need some tips. Good luck!

Most likely your door lock actuator. The driver's door is typically the one that goes first because it gets the most use. Stop using the soft close for the doors until you get the problem fixed. Otherwise, you will burn out your PSE pump and they are about $800 to replace.

Perhaps we need to clarify some terminology...

Your doors have two pneumatic actuations - soft-close and locking. These are done by the same pressure/vacuum pump in the trunk/boot (the PSE pump), but use two different electronically-controlled pneumatic actuators in each door.

If the doors lock/unlock with the key remote and dash button, the PSE pump is operating.

If a door does not soft-close, and you hear a hissing from the door, the most common problem is a failed pneumatic actuator. This failure may be the rubber diaphragm in the actuator, or the failure of the plastic body. Less commonly, it can be a failed line.

The soft-close actuator is located on the bottom of the door lock mechanism, and can often be repaired or replaced. There are numerous YouTube videos showing these repairs, and there are vendors who sell the replacement parts. This is much less expensive, and often easier, than replacing the door lock mechanism.

Go to the encyclopedia at the top of the Forum page - look for "start here", and search for the specific soft-close posts. Research first, spend money last...
