Best Tire size for 20" wheels on 2000 S500
Hello , I know this has been asked before but I need the Best Tire size for 20x9 wheels , I did a search and some have put 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20 rear, some has 245/40/20 and 275/35/20 and some has 255/35/20 all the way around . So I am confused what to go with on a 2000 S500 . I plane to lower the car in the future so have that in mind , thanks

You have the exact size wheels as I have. 20"x9". Go with a 255/35. This is the proper tire size for the rims you plan on putting on. I did extensive research and am pretty confident of this. Also, when it comes to rotating your tires you can do so easily and get full life out of your tires. I went with what I believe to be the best tires and the ride is unbelievably smooth. Everyone who rides in my car can't believe how nicely it drives on 20s. Whereas with the wrong tires, it'll be a different story. I went with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. Look on tirerack.com to get more info on them. As you'll see for yourself the price is not cheap, but if you email me at armanis500@aol.com I can get you a great price.

This post is 8 years old its doubtful that member is still around
Rear tire wear that fast happens due to bad alignment or smoking the tires , most likely the latter

Looking at recommendation for 20x9 front 20x10.5 rear tire size ? 245/35/20 front & 275/30/20 rear is recommend for 9 and 10" rear, but mine is 10.5 in rear. Would 275/30 on 10.5 rim stretch ? Any recommendation, i could go with 255/35/20 & 285/30/20, currently running amg 18" and have the car slammed.

275 is generally good for a 9-10" rim width. Where as 285 is generally good 9.5-10.5" rim width. The aspect ratio will somewhat dictate how stretchable a tire is, but I wouldn't suggest doing. I would suggest the 285/30R20. You would only be off by 1.5% in your speedo unless calibrated (This is based of S500 with AMG Package Wheels). I said generally because these can slightly change based on manufacturer of tire.
Specification ......... Sidewall ..... Radius ....... Diameter ...... Circumference ...... Revs/Mile ...... Difference
... 265/40-18 ......... 4.2in ........ 13.2in ........ 26.3in ............. 82.8in ................. 765 ................ 0.0% ...... <---- Stock Rear Tire Size on S500 with AMG Package
... 285/30-20 ......... 3.4in ........ 13.4in ........ 26.7in ............. 84.0in ................. 754 ................ 1.5%

Its a s600, w220 model. Not sure it matters since all w220 are same size. I went with 245/35 and 275/30, i saw a Mercedes spec sheet with 9" front recommending 245 tires and for 10" rear recommending 275 to keep the speedometer and other specs in line, however as you know the rims are 10.5" so I stayed with the 275 in rear, I do think maybe i should have went with 285 to be safe. I might try calling them tomorrow to see if they shipped it out yet. The new model sclass w221 recommended 255/35 and 285/30 for 9" front and 10.5 rear. If they already shipped it, you guys think i will be aright with the 245 f 275 r ?

Called today and was able to change the rear to 285/30. So my setup for 20rims with 9" front and 10.5" rear will be 245/35/20 front tire with 285/30/20 in rear tire. Did a ton of research and a 275 on 10.5 rim is doable and a lot of people have done it, its not quite a stretch but borderline. The reason I didn't do it because of the weight of the car, the w220 weights so much more then rest of cars, and I didn't want to risk complications. Thanks all for help

you need to keep overall diameters front and rear very close or else you'll get esp errors

Yes, I would definitely agree with tusabes with this. you will want the diameter of the tire between front and rear to be close to the same because of this. As it would affect anti-lock/electronic brakes.

MBWorld Fanatic!
Good rule of thumb is that the tire should be one inch wider than the wheel.
Very low profile tires have less latitude for miss-matching than taller tires, according to tire manufacturer data sheets.
if you stretch 245 tires across 9" you will spoil the ride and handling, and the tire shoulders will wear out very fast.
Been there, done that, wouldn't do it again:

Luckily they had issues with TPMS sensor and wanted me to send my old once in to Copy the ID. I didn't 'wanted to go that route so they ordered them in, which gave me some time now to change the tire size again. I went with 255/35/20 tires front on 9" rim and 285/30/20 on 10.5"rim. This is what is recommended per spec sheet, so I am very happy I was able to change it, just for the fact how sensitive the car is and the weight of it. Also, I ordered a fender roller so I can get that stance, Thanks everyone, really glad I got your input and had time to switch it up.
