2004 S500 4Matic driver side bad strut, why both sides on floor?

Hi all.

Have a 2004 S500 4Matic that one morning found competely bottomed out on the front end with red message in dash reading “AIRMATIC STOP, CAR TOO LOW!”. Rear end is still sitting at normal level.

After some analysis, I came to conclusion that front driver side strut is kaput and needs to be replaced. However, I'm confused as to why the entire front end is on the floor as opposed to only the culprit side? Is this some sort of safety system that the Benz has in order to (my guess) maintain balance on the front end?

Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.
