Oil Fill Message

I'm getting the "add 1.0 litre oil at filling station" message pop up briefly from time to time. The next service isn't due to 12K miles.

When I tried to check the oil level by turning the key to position 2, it says "turn engine on." But then when I turn it on, it says "engine must be off" (or something to that effect). So, I don't understand how to run the oil level check through the car.

When I check the oil level manually with the dipstick, it does seem a bit low.

What kind of oil is recommended? Seems kind of strange that this isn't listed in the Owner's Manual.

i figured out the oil checker... now it says to add 2 L.

looks like most are recommending Mobil One 0w40 European Car Formula, though I don't know what's in there already. guess it shouldn't matter.

The oil level sensor will work if the engine is warm, and has been shut down for two minutes. Turn the ignition on (but don't start the engine), or leave it on after driving, and then check the oil level. Make certain that the car is on level ground.

If you need to add oil (and it sounds like you do) the Mobil 1 0W40 is a good choice. It's also readily available (Costco, Walmart) and much less expensive than many oils. Be certain to use an oil that meets MB 229.5 and is on Mercedes approved list.

Good.

That's the oil that I use in my S600. I've had it analyzed by Blackstone labs, and it has performed well in my car. Use it with confidence.

Here's an example of the analysis: https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...edes-s600-m275

You can check the precise level as well.
Do this.
1) Put the key in position 2, turn the menu to show miles.
2) Hit R 3 times.
Will now show voltage.
3) Scroll up once on the menu and will show you the engine type. Oil level on lower right will be blank.
4) Turn the key to position 3 (not starting the car) and wait, it will show oil level in qts.
You can also reset the service menu while you are in there.
