Car Won't Start....

OK, I know I just said that I haven't had any problems with my 2000 S430, but last night, out of the clear blue, it wouldn't start.

Lights and everything seem to be fine, but when I click it to the right to start, nothing. No sounds, nothing.

I am going to be checking fuses and trying alternate keys today (as soon as I get to where I had to leave it). Might even try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery to see if that helps...

Anybody have any other suggestions for me?

Thanks,

Mike

i beleive you still have warranty on major components...call up MB and they will tow the car for you to their dealership and get it fixed from them..i would not mess around with it if i were you...one because i have limited knowledge on how to fix vehicles and second this is a MB we are talking about here not a honda ;-) so brother the dealership is the best place to get in touch with..

Hey Same Thing Happened To My 2000 S430. Turns Out I Needed A New Crank Sensor Once They Put It In The Car It Started Right Up.

mikeblah Nov 25, 2004 12:52 AM

was the crank sensor anything major or like a few hundred bucks?

i'll be having it towed in on friday, so we'll see what happens.

it's always exciting to see what the dealership has to say!

The Technician Put The Crank Sensor In There For Nothing Because I Was Taking The Car Over There All Week Because It Wouldnt Start. He Probably Felt Sorry About The Towing Fees I Had To Pay. If He Put It In There For Free It Shouldnt Be That Much, But The Car Starts Right Up.

you need a new starter or flywheel. does it make a sound like weeeeeee. kinda like that? like you hear the battery giving power to the starter but it doesn't wana catch?

mikeblah Nov 25, 2004 11:53 AM

actually it doesn't make any noise at all. it's just like there's a fuse blown or something. nothing is spinning at all...

mikeblah Nov 25, 2004 11:54 AM

thanks nobs,

i'll be sure to mention it when i drop it off. it would be great if that's all it was.

thanks again

ok here's the update.

towed the car into the dealership yesterday. the service manager mentioned a recall/update fix that he needed to do while it was in.

turns out the update issue fixes a problem in the wiring harness that runs the interior blower and that exact fuse blew when my car refused to start.

i spoke to the guy after my car was in there for most of the day and he says that there is an electrical problem that is going to take some time to find and fix.

if anyone else is running around in a 2000 430, i suggest getting the fix before you have to go through this hassle...

mikeblah would you then agree that the 2000 S classes did have some technical faults ( no offence in any way).

mikeblah Nov 28, 2004 03:00 PM

none taken, thanks...

yes, at this point i would have to agree. i haven't had many cars with over 100K miles so i'm not sure what is reasonable to expect.

but at about $1000 everytime something major happens, i would agree that the 2000s are more of a gamble than a newer version where they would have fixed some of these issues...

i don't think of it as a major expense, but when you think about the car only being worth about $40k now and spending up to $2000/yr on maintenance by the time you factor in the major break downs. i can see how it would not be worth it to some people to keep the car...

Lexino Nov 29, 2004 01:41 PM

yea well i guess your right that is reasonable maintenance after all we are all driving S classes it doesnt get any better

I Had My 2000 S430 For 2 Years Now And I Only Had One Major Thing Happen To It. My Left Rear Air Bag Busted For The Suspension, And That Ran Me About 1000 Dollars. Since That Year Was The First Year Of The New Body Style, I Know The New Ones Should Definately Be Better Than The 2000 Model Because Simply Because There Getting To Know The Car Better.

Lexino Nov 29, 2004 10:54 PM

yea i agree with you nobs its like every year they work out the kinks from the previous year vehicle so its natural progression thats all

mikeblah Nov 30, 2004 04:17 PM

ok, it's looking up for this car after all.

just heard back from the dealership. the ground strap came loose on the starter and they just needed to tighten it up. no charge since it took them so long to diagnose.

not bad, huh?

we'll see what happens next...

Lexino Nov 30, 2004 05:00 PM

hey thats not bad...
